Read John Oliver's Response To Clinton's Win

Election Day is finally over, and there's a new president headed to the White House. Donald Trump is officially the 45th President of the United States, to the fear of millions in the U.S. and around the world. For those who were closest to the action and therefore most anxiety ridden about this election, the man who kept you sane and laughing over the last 18 months just spoke out about the results. But even John Oliver had trouble making light of a Trump presidency, giving a cautious and statement about what lies ahead for the country.

“I was trying to think of a way to tell you everything’s going to be okay - I’m not sure, practically, how I can do that," Oliver said on stage at the Natural Resources Defense Council's annual Night of Comedy fundraiser the night after Election Day. "That depends who you are, and what your definition of ‘okay’ is. Looking out, most of you [will be] fine," Oliver joked, referencing the wealthy crowd's relative protection from some of the new president-elect's more discriminatory policy prescriptions.

"But that’s not the point. The point is, will America be okay? That’s a difficult question to answer," Oliver continued, putting the jokes aside. "I will say this — you are a defiant nation. This is the most defiant nation on the planet Earth. The fact that some of you are probably sitting there going ‘No, we’re not’ proves my point. You are defiant in the face of everything, from a threat to a fact — you do not let those things push you around."

Oliver doesn't exactly hide the fact that he has a more liberal political ideology. Considering his viewpoints on gun control, charter schools, abortion access, and the host of other issues he's tackled on Last Week Tonight, not to mention the nearly half-hour segment he devoted solely to ripping apart Donald Trump, it's not difficult to imagine that Oliver was pretty upset by the outcome of the election.

However, the fact that Oliver has already started to see the bright side of things is a reassuring sign for all of those who are having a tough time moving on from this election. This election legitimized a lot of hate and prejudice, but Oliver reminds the country that it won't stand for it in the long run. The United States has always managed to push forward towards equality and freedom for all, and that pattern isn't going to change any time soon. It seems unquestionable that this is just a dark period in American society that will naturally be followed by love and light.

The real question now is what Oliver's show will look like in the aftermath of the vote. Now that Trump is president, there could be a whole new world of material for Oliver to explore once her administration gets underway. Oliver's primary focus for the show is policy over politics and he tends to focus on systemic local issues over necessarily federal concerns, but depending on how Trump handles his first 100 days in office, Oliver and Last Week Tonight could have a very funny and poignant season coming up.
