See The Election Results On Fire

by Maya Parthasarathy

As the presidential election draws to a close, you may be looking for a different set of election results to consult. (Maybe one that doesn't project Donald Trump to win?) If so, you're in luck. Here's a Facebook live election map that's literally on fire, courtesy of Super Deluxe.

Results have been coming in all day, and as of the early hours of Nov. 9, neither candidate has the 270 electoral votes required to secure the presidency. That being said, Trump has a sizable lead over his opponent Hillary Clinton, and a Trump victory seems likely.

Super Deluxe's live election map could have been inspired by many different ideas, but it represents the discontent of the portion of the American public that has a problem with the country's electoral system, the election, or the choice of candidates. Some, including Vox's Ezra Klein, argue that America's democratic system is fundamentally flawed. Others are simply disappointed that Clinton didn't easily beat Trump in a landslide as many of her supporters predicted she would. Still others are upset that Bernie Sanders wasn't the Democratic candidate over Clinton.

The on-fire election map is open to interpretation. It easily represents the feelings of any American who has been disappointed by this election process in any way.

Neither Clinton nor Trump has been viewed favorably by the American public. In fact, both candidates were ranked as almost identically dislikable in the eyes of the American public, with 59 percent of registered voters viewing Clinton unfavorably, and 60 percent viewing Trump unfavorably, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll. But with the United States' two-party system making it practically impossible for a third-party candidate to be elected to the presidency, millions of American voters likely felt stuck between a rock and a hard place when it came to choosing between the Democratic and Republican candidates. For many, a vote between Clinton and Trump could have been seen as a choice of the lesser of two evils.

The live election map could also apply to election results other than the presidential election, whether it be for the office of president, Congress, and/or ballot initiatives. But if you, like millions of other Americans who voted for candidates or initiatives that didn't end up passing, are unhappy with how Election Day 2016 turned out, at least there's still humor from sources like Super Deluxe to carry us through these difficult times.
