Ellie Goulding's 'Divergent' Music Video Is Here

by Alanna Bennett

You have probably heard Ellie Goulding's song "Beating Heart." I had heard Ellie Goulding's "Beating Heart" and not even realized it. Then I watched the music video for the song and it hit me: "Beating Heart" is that song that's been playing in the Divergent trailers for months.

The video itself features an interesting mix of footage from Divergent, images of Goulding herself, and... allusions to The Hunger Games? Basically, there's lots of footage of Shailene Woodley and Theo James running around with their tattoos, but a lot of stuff about kids wandering around the woods, perhaps in some sort of organized ritual sacrifice. I'm just sayin'.

The song is at once lilting and epic, though, which, as we've learned in the past, is always a good way to distract and/or alert the audience that they're watching a movie in which a lot of very young people are very much killed. The video also features an interesting mix of the actual actors playing Tris and Four and a copycat actor playing Four while pouting towards Ellie Goulding in a forest. It's like if you fell asleep with The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Twilight all playing simultaneously — a YA mashup fever dream.
