Why Shaving & Waxing Dries Out Your Skin In Winter

Hair removal can be a pain in the derrière at the best of times, but when you throw the harsh weather conditions of winter into the mix, things get even more complicated. Considering the fact that winter often means dry skin, you might be wondering if you need to change your hair removal routine in the winter.

“Every time you shave or wax, you remove your skin’s outer layer. So waxing and shaving both disrupt your skin’s ability to stay hydrated in cold weather,” says Dr. Janet Prystowsky in an email to Bustle. "This means that every time you shave or wax in the winter, you’ll probably end up with dry, irritated skin. Using a body oil or ointments like Vaseline or Aquaphor will definitely help, but there is a better option that most people don’t think to consider.”

It's enough to make you hesitate before picking up your waxing strips or razor. After all, there's nothing worse than dry, itchy winter skin. That considered, there is another option to think about. "Laser hair removal can rid an entire area of hair for two months in less than an hour," Prystowsky explains. "When that hair grows back, it will grow back less thick. With only three appointments between December and May, you can skip shaving or waxing for that whole half of a year. Plus, when your hair starts growing back for the summer, it will grow back less thick than the year before because of the reduction at each appointment. If you decide to do laser hair removal for two winters back to back, you may never need to shave or wax again!"

However, there is a down side to laser hair removal. "The big hurdle to cross with laser hair removal is the cost," Prystowsky says. "I recommend going to a physician for the treatment because there’s less risk of any complications occurring. A physician is more likely to set the laser at the correct setting for your skin type."

"At the end of the day, you’re going to be happier paying more money for a job well done, than less money for a bad job. A bad laser appointment could literally be scarring," Prystowsky explains. "Also keep in mind that this is an investment. You are paying to not cut your legs up a few times a week. You’re paying to not rip hot wax off of yourself. You’re paying to avoid the risk of ingrown hairs that can cause scars. With laser, you’re paying for the potential to never have to worry about your body hair again."

Laser hair removal could potentially make your life easier in the long run, and help you combat dry, itchy winter skin. If you have the money, and you're dead set on your legs never getting dehydrated, laser hair removal might be your best winter hair removal option.
