What Really Happens To Credence At 'Beasts' End

by Rachel Simon

When it comes to a new installment of JK Rowling's big-screen wizarding world, pretty much everything is kept top-secret. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the new Harry Potter spinoff film, is certainly no exception. Everything from the characters being introduced to the spells being cast is a mystery, and that's especially true for anything surrounding Credence, the character played by Ezra Miller. An abused teen raised in a foster home, Credence seems to play a supporting role in Fantastic Beasts for much of the movie, but the film's ending sees him taking on a much bigger part. Spoilers ahead. The film's finale, which shows Credence, revealed to be a highly unstable obscurus who's caused deaths around New York, seemingly being killed by wizards, leaves viewers not sure if Credence is really dead, and even Fantastic Beasts star Ezra Miller is tight-lipped when it comes to giving the answer to that question.

"I just don’t really know," Miller says at the Fantastic Beasts press day in New York, when asked if his character is gone from the franchise for good. A massive fan of the Harry Potter series, the actor adds that he'd love to come back for a sequel, both for the character's sake and his own. "I tell you, I’m banking on that," he says with a laugh. "I’m really grateful for what I’ve gotten to be a part of so far, but gosh, that would be incredible. All digits crossed for Credence’s survival."

At the end of the movie, Credence, as the obscurus intent on destroying everything around him, is nearly convinced by Newt and Tina to give in, but when a large group of wizards come in and cast spells on him, he's seemingly obliterated. Yet a glimpse of light, as well as a sliver of the obscurus that seemed to slip out of the top of the subway, seems to indicate that Credence might not be totally gone, and that the character could be back, in one form or another, in Fantastic Beasts ' upcoming sequel. While Miller isn't going risk dropping any actual spoilers, it's clear that he'd love nothing more than to get to reprise his role and continue on with the franchise.

"As an actor, it’s an incredible role, the type of role that you dream about no matter what context it exists in," Miller says of Credence. Getting to continue working with Beasts' star Eddie Redmayne, too, would be, well, fantastic, he adds. "That man is so generous," Miller says of his co-star. "He’s making real personal sacrifices to give us some of the greatest performances of our times... I was just amazed by him, and so thankful to have the opportunity to work with him a little. I hope to do more in the future, because he is such a phenomenon."

Only Rowling might know exactly where Credence's fate leads, but for both Miller's sake and for the sake of the fans, here's hoping that the character gets to come back next film and cause even more mayhem for the wizards of 1920s New York.
