Rory Has Issues With Wookiees On 'Gilmore Girls'

I truly never imagined a day in which I’d hear Rory Gilmore rant about having a one-night stand with a Wookiee, but it’s 2016, the world is upside down, and this particular nightmare has come true. I’ll explain in a minute, but suffice it to say that Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life features older and maybe, sometimes wiser versions of Rory, Lorelai, and Emily, and every episode reveals a little something new about what’s happened to our Gilmore girls over the past decade away. Rory’s Wookiee rant in the Gilmore Girls revival showed that she’s definitely not the naïve girl we met on her first day at Chilton.

Why did Rory Gilmore have sex with a Wookiee, you might ask? Well, it all started when Rory went to New York City to do a piece (she’s a full-time writer now) on people who wait in lines for things — sneakers, fictional versions of the Cronut, video games, etc. Lorelai joined her, and of course got all of those things without waiting on line for them, but the Wookiee thing started when Lorelai went back to the hotel so Rory could finish up her interviewing and Rory went off with a band of cosplayers. There was a lot of alcohol involved — natch — one thing led to another, and Rory ended up having sex with a Wookiee back at his Wookiee dwelling. It happens, amirite?

It seems that the drunker she got, the funnier and more attractive this man in a Wookiee costume became (isn’t that always the case?), and Rory and said Wookiee decided to take the moment and make it theirs. I hope they were safe, because no world needs babies that are half Rory Gilmore and half man-who-dresses-as-a-Wookiee. Rory lamented the fact that she had a one-night stand — this was her first — especially because it was with a man who was in costume, and Lorelai shrugged it off, saying that she had never had a one-night stand, but she had had a few of three-night stands, and it’s not a big deal. Lorelai is right — Rory’s one-night stand isn’t a big deal. It’s just a great story to tell. She could probably drink for free off that one for a year or two.

While Rory was ranting and raving and spinning out of control in panic about having sex with a Wookiee (she definitely took points from Paris on how to have a panic attack), what struck me is how old she is now (32!) and how it’s really normal for her to have this conversation with Lorelai, her mother. Rory is basically the age now that Lorelai was when the show started — isn’t that bizarre? We met Rory when she was a quiet schoolgirl, and now she’s a full-blown woman, taking control of her sexuality and bopping around the planet writing stories for the New Yorker. When did that happen? In any case, Rory’s Wookiee sex is a reminder that she is woman, hear her roar — but not, like, a Wookiee roar.
