Haley & Trump Haven't Been Bosom Buddies

by Charlie Beckerman

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he was tapping South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to be his ambassador to the United Nations, which took many of us by surprise, considering Haley and Trump aren’t exactly bosom buddies. The two had a contentious primary season which included Haley endorsing Trump’s primary opponents — first endorsing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in February, and then, after he dropped out, backing Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Over that time, the two had more than a few unkind words for one another.

So far, the lion’s share of Trump's posts have been doled out to Republicans who were loyal to him throughout the presidenntial campaign — people like the controversial Steve Bannon, who served as the Trump campaign CEO, or Jeff Sessions, who was one of the first senators to back Trump in the primary.

Still, Trump has been meeting with many Republicans who took stands against him during the campaign: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who tore into Trump’s candidacy in March, met with the president-elect at his golf course in New Jersey, apparently to discuss being Trump’s Secretary of State.

But since our memories are not quite as short as Haley’s and Trump’s might be, let’s take a moment to revisit some of the tenderest exchanges between the president-elect and his new UN Ambassador.

The Great Twitter Swipe

A prime example of Donald Trump’s warm and tender-heartedness.

But Haley Don’t Play

Here, Haley engages in the ancient southern girl art of saying something nice but actually meaning it as a deep-cut insult. So deep.

But Haley wasn’t new to hitting Trump without looking like it.

The State of the Union Response

In her GOP response to President Obama’s final State of the Union speech, Haley jabbed at Trump without ever saying his name. “During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices,” Haley said. “We must resist that temptation. No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”

Trump Strikes Back

In the days following the State Of The Union, Trump hit back at Haley, saying on Fox & Friends that he thought Haley was “very weak on immigration.”

‘Irresponsible Talk’

When asked in follow-ups to her State of the Union Speech if she was referring to Trump, she said “Mr. Trump has definitely contributed to what I think is just irresponsible talk.”

‘Not a Fan’

Even going into the election itself, Haley fell short of a full-throated endorsement of the GOP nominee, saying she’d vote for Trump even though she was “not a fan” of either candidate.

What this portends for the rest of a Trump cabinet remains unseen, but if Trump is willing to work with people who weren’t his biggest supporters, he may end up uniting the GOP after all.
