'Top Gun 2' is In the Works...Again

by Rachel Semigran

Let's just get this out of the way: Top Gun was released the year I was born. And within the span of my entire lifetime, talks of a sequel have bounced around between Director/Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and star Tom Cruise to no avail. Between Bruckheimer's mega-million-blockbuster-truckasaurus-extravaganza schedule and Tom Cruise's dual life as an A-lister and Scientology overlord (or something), the project has never exactly taken flight (I hate myself for that joke, but I can't promise there wont be more plane-related puns in the future of this article). It seems that yet again, Top Gun 2 is BACK IN THE AIR.

According to Bruckheimer, "We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer...[Producer] Don Simpson and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. Tom Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it." And here's what you can expect from Top Gun 2,

The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones. Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay," Bruckheimer said. "It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that Paramount feels they can make the picture.

Thankfully for Bruckheimer, Cruise has had almost an entire bankable career devoted to Man vs. Machine/Aliens. So if and when the sequel ever does come together, Cruise would have no problem returning as Maverick.

And as much as we love our #TBT and old-school reunions nowadays, if the Top Gun folks really want to excite us about the sequel, well....why not cast the lead and the crew as women? Nearly every single war or action movie are hyper-masculine and it doesn't paint a fair picture for the real-life women in uniform — be it in the armed services, intelligence, or otherwise — we almost never see them in film. So if Cruise's hectic schedule is keeping us from Top Gun 2, well, why not look to these female actors instead?

She's been kicking ass and taking names ALL OVER THE PLACE and clearly has a good enough sense of humor to carry the cheese-tastic-ness of a Top Gun sequel.

Michelle Rodriguez

She's one-third of the blockbuster powerhouse trio from the Fast and the Furious franchise. If you need an action star, look no further.

Angelina Jolie

Jolie may spend more of her time being a global humanitarian...but in case you forgot, she's also a HUGE movie star. And in her biggest blockbusters, she plays gun-wielding, butt-kicking, tough-as-nails femme fatales. So yeah, she could totally run the crap out of a bunch of fighter pilots.

Yeoh made a huge impression when she starred in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. She's a kung-fu expert who also performs her own stunts. So , take that, fellas.

Because UNDERWORLD.

I both fear her and want to be everything that she is. I'm pretty sure if she strolled up to Bruckheimer and asked for the role, not only would he give it to her, he'd digitally insert her into the original.
