A 'Ghostbusters' Multi-Verse May Be In The Works

by Allie Gemmill

If anything, the summer of 2016 will be remembered, in part, as the summer that the Ghostbusters reboot shook up cinema. Nobody could have predicted the intense uphill battle that went into making Ghostbusters a success, but the fanfare, notably female, that met the Ghostbusters reboots was not only exciting, it left fans clamoring for more. In discussing whether a Ghostbusters sequel would happen, we should also consider a possible Ghostbusters multi-verse; if we are to believe the director of the original 1984 Ghostbusters, Ivan Reitman, more Ghosbusters films are in production and it could open the door to an entire Ghostbusters cinematic universe.

In an interview on the Mr. Wavvy Podcast, Reitman stated that, "there’s going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, they’re just in development right now." This isn't the first time that the idea of further Ghostbusters sequels has come up, though, and that's why we should take this news with a pinch of salt. It is indeed exciting to know that there are other films in the works under the Ghostbusters name; figuring out whether that bodes well or poorly for the all-female cast of the 2016 reboot is yet to be determined.

Reitman's confirmation of further Ghostbusters films at the very least opens up the door to an expanded Ghostbusters universe, á la the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's certainly enough traction from the newest Ghostbusters film, along with a newly-expanded fandom, to warrant more films, all-female cast or not. There's certainly an opportunity to churn out a few more origins stories featuring different ghost-busting teams that would unite in one final film to fight a huge villain. Or, while I begrudge the idea myself, the future Ghostbusters films could go back to a stand mostly-male cast and continue the adventures begun by female team.

No matter what the future holds for the Ghostbusters cinematic universe, the mere knowledge that there is a future for the franchise and that it could splinter off into exciting new directions is ridiculously exciting.
