Jessica Simpson Laughs At Her Chicken Or Fish Line

by Daniela Cabrera

Once upon a time, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey were one of pop music's hottest couples. The ultra early '00s pairing also became some of the first crossover reality television show stars when they launched their MTV show, Newlyweds, in 2003, which chronicled their first years of marriage. As most '90s kids can attest, it was glorious and special and spawned one of the most infamous lines in pop culture when Simpson pondered about the meaning of a popular canned food. And now, 13 years later, Simpson brought up her "Chicken of the Sea" line again in a hilarious and epic way, and I can say, I definitely needed that nostalgic laugh.

Way back in the first episode of the first season of Newlyweds, the couple sat around their living room when Simpson asked Lachey while eating a bowl of tuna, "Is this chicken that I have, or is this fish? I know it’s tuna, but it says chicken... by the sea." A perplexed Lachey looked over at Simpson and told her that she "acts like she never had tuna before." And then she asked, "But why is it called Chicken by the Sea or In the Sea?"

Ah, yes, it is still a question for the ages, and an iconic moment that still makes me giggle when I spot Chicken of the Sea at the grocery store. Well, 13 years later it seems that Simpson still can't let go of the moment, because she shared this hilarious meme on social media:

I don't know about you, but just this image of a lone actual chicken just chilling in a body of water is killing me. I also love that Simpsons is now CEO of a billion dollar empire and can look back at this moment and poke a little fun at herself, because it is a moment that most fans will always remember as a part of pop culture.

As silly as the question might have sounded years ago, it looks like Simpson was ahead of the meme game, without even knowing. I love the internet for letting us enjoy this little nugget again and letting her have fun with it, too.
