Don't Expect A 'Back To The Future' Reboot

Some fans may be devastated by this news, but many will probably be delighted to know that Back to the Future won't be getting the reboot treatment — at least not if producer Frank Marshall has a say in the matter. Which you know, he probably will, since he's produced everything from Indiana Jones to The Color Purple and back again. While talking to Yahoo Movies, Marshall promised that the 1980s' classic will forgo the route of many popular franchises and stay in the past.

The executive producer of all three Back to the Future films stated, “Yeah [there will be no reboot of Back To The Future], as long as I have my say. No, that one exists just like E.T. — we’re never touching those. I love watching it.” And I've got to say, I agree with him. As much as we, this generation of millennials, crave the nostalgic joys of a reboot to one of our favorite shows or movies, some things are better left as an undisturbed masterpiece.

The screenwriter of the Back to the Future trilogy, Bob Gale, also seems to agree with this notion and told Yahoo Movies in 2014, “Let’s face it, we’ve seen a lot of sequels that are made years and years later and I don’t think I can name one that’s any good ... that lives up to the originals. I don’t think you can recapture it.”

The best part of Back to the Future franchise is the different clothing and vibes from all the periods Doc Brown and Marty McFly visit — the '80s, the '50s, the 2010s and the 1880s — the shtick was there, the shtick has been done, and anything new would seem redundant. Even if this hypothetical Back to the Future franchise portrayed different time periods in the most ingenious way, the writers wrote the best tongue-in-cheek lines, and then the actors delivered them in the funniest way possible — it would still be an homage of an homage. Overdone.

Besides, can you picture anyone else as the starring role in a Back to the Future movie besides Michael J. Fox? The attitude Fox brings to the character (not to mention that snug red vest and denim jeans) are what make the entire trilogy for so many. There can't be a Back to the Future without Fox and the guy hasn't acted since 2013. He now dedicates his time to speaking about the disease he's battling, Parkinson's, and working to find a cure. Back to the Future is his past, and that's how it must remain for us all.

I know we live in a world where all the shows and movies we love eventually come back one day. But sometimes we just have to let the past go and head on into the future of new ideas. If Back to the Future taught us anything, it's that there is a world of possibilities.
