Amy Schumer May Play Barbie On The Big Screen

by Allie Gemmill

Nothing could be a more delightful cap to another hectic week than to share this piece of news with you: Amy Schumer may star in the Barbie movie, according to Variety. That's right. Schumer is most likely going to play Barbie — in a live-action Barbie movie. But that's not even the best part. With talks of Schumer entering the project, you know that she will add a whole new perspective to the Barbie legacy. In bringing to life one of the most iconic toys of all time, Schumer would smash through any preconceived stereotypes typically associated with the doll and name.

Variety described the plot of the upcoming Barbie film as a "story is in the vein of Splash, Enchanted, and Big. In it, the main character gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and lands in a real-world adventure." Without even having to think about it, I am totally on board for this one. There's no doubt that if this film is set to go in the meta-comic vein of Enchanted, especially, then the chance to poke fun at Barbie stereotypes, like exaggerated femininity, conformity, or even acting like a dumb blonde will get a fresh and darkly comic slant to them thanks to Schumer's performance. Even better, Schumer may also co-write on the film, so she'll no doubt insert her own acerbic observations about modern womanhood even if she has to tone it down to broaden audience appeal.

Schumer is no stranger to tearing down ingrained and often sexist ideas society has about women. Inside Amy Schumer has often served as the comedian's primary venue to tackle how women approach topics like beauty, dating, friendships, and the conundrums of daily life; this material would translate seamlessly into a live-action Barbie movie, which is attempting to do the same kind of thing.

While the Barbie film has been a long-gestating project at Sony Pictures, the news of Schumer's involvement in the project will definitely ensure it gets its much needed lift-off into official production territory. I couldn't think of any woman better suited to reinvent Barbie for the big screen than Schumer.
