There's No Sia In The Major Grammys Categories

by Amy Mackelden

The Grammy nominations were announced on Tuesday, and there were several surprises in the list of nominees. Most people predicted that Adele and Beyoncé would be going head to head, but it was a fair assumption to make that Sia would make it into one of the major categories too. Her epic album This Is Acting, seemed like an obvious choice to be nominated in the Album Of The Year category. However, Sia was snubbed in Grammy nominations in the major categories, which is pretty hard to believe.

While any follow up to 2014's 1000 Forms Of Fear was going to have a lot to live up to, This Is Acting has been incredibly well received. Sia's productivity as a songwriter continues to astound fans the world over, and her singles "The Greatest" and "Cheap Thrills" are amongst the most memorable tracks of the year. So why weren't either of them nominated for Song Of The Year or Record Of The Year? With so many incredible releases to choose from, it must've been an impossible job to narrow down nominees for the Big Four categories. But it's strange that Sia didn't make it into any of the major Grammy categories this year, since This Is Acting deserves way more love.

Thankfully, Sia's talent hasn't been completely ignored in the 2017 Grammy nominations. This Is Acting is nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, and she's nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for her single "Cheap Thrills." Sia also co-wrote the song "Try Everything" from the movie Zootopia, which is nominated in the Best Song Written For Visual Media category. Clearly, Sia is a prolific writer and performer, and the Grammys haven't overlooked her completely. Still, it feels as though she's a major player in the music industry, with a superhero-like ability to write contagious pop songs like no other. The major categories snub still hurts. But maybe it's understandable.

While This Is Acting has been a successful album to date, it hasn't had quite the impact that 1000 Forms Of Fear, and that album's lead single "Chandelier," had. Compared to Adele's 25, Beyoncé's Lemonade, Drake's Views, and Justin Bieber's Purpose , This Is Acting doesn't feel like a pivotal album for Sia. While the artists nominated in the Album Of The Year category for 2017 have arguably released their best work to date, that's groundbreaking, or identity-shifting in some way, This Is Acting feels like a solid collection of pop songs, but perhaps not Album Of The Year fodder.

It's a shame that Sia didn't get at least one nod in the Big Four Grammy nominations, but her talent has been recognized elsewhere. Sia's career is going from strength to strength, and I've no doubt that she'll find herself nominated again at the Grammys in the not too distant future.
