Twitter Is Pissed About Shawn Mendes' Grammys Snub

by Mary Grace Garis

Every year, as we do the slow crawl towards award season, we prep our outrage over which of our new faves will get snubbed. Now that the 2017 Grammy nominees have been announced, you can let that outrage flow: teen superstar Shawn Mendes was denied any Grammy nominations. Sure enough, the social media pitchforks and torches are out and looking for blood... or OK, there are plenty of Mendes fans on Twitter who are expressing their grief in no uncertain terms.

Why? Because they believe, with reasonable conviction, that Mendes is one of the most enormous and humble talents out there, someone who's worked so hard over the past two and a half years. His sophomore effort, Illuminate, was quick to debut at number one on the Billboard charts, not to mention released a solid week before the Grammy submission cut-off. And if only to add further insult to injury, he just made a successful debut on Emma Stone's Saturday Night Live, formally showcasing just how far he's gotten with his acoustic guitar. In short, it feels as though all his hard work means nothing, and now all there is to do is hail the torches at the Grammy Gods and comfort the singer-songwriter.

Of course, there’s a whole range of the feels outpouring over the social media sphere. Some are smoldering in anger...

And then some are filled with disappointment...

Certain fans have taken on weird forms of stress-eating...

Some fans have decided to let pictures speak their 140 characters, stone-faced in the disturbing lack of noms...

And, in true internet form, some are just letting the gifs take their course...

However, mostly what can be seen is a stream of support from Mendes' fanbase. There's no shortage of tweets that celebrate just how much he has done in his still nascent career. Let's not all forget that Mendes is 18 years old, someone who managed to rise into fame through Vine, of all things. And though it's disappointing that he didn't get a throw-him-a-bone Best New Artist nod, this is hardly his last shot at a golden gramophone. In fact, his fans are absolutely confident that his talents will prevail, regardless of whether any awards pop up in the immediate to near future.

As far as Mendes goes, he's been pretty non-reactive about the Grammy upset. In fact, he's been more about extending good will to his fellow musicians, like when he tweeted Chance the Rapper, "very cool man! Congrats on the Nom!!! You deserve it !" How adorable is that? And while Mendes' fans were quick to cry out en masse that he deserved it, it seems that he will be just fine. There's always next year, guys.
