Why Kimye's Marriage Is Actually Resilient

by Amy Roberts

If ever you needed proof that the course of true love never did run smooth, then you only need to look to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's marriage. Living what is undoubtedly one of the most public relationships on the planet, there's been an endless stream of divorce rumors about Kimye since they were married back in May 2014. And on Tuesday, a US Weekly source gave the world the most recent allegation regarding their marriage — they claimed Kardashian wants to divorce West. The story, and much of the conjecture surrounding it, sounds startlingly familiar.

As told to US Weekly by a mysterious insider who claims to be Kardashian's friend, "Kim wants a divorce ... it will take some time before she can do anything, but she doesn’t want to stay married." This fresh divorce rumor arrives at what must be a difficult time in the couple's marriage, with West currently receiving outpatient care after his recent hospitalization.

However, another insider painted a completely different picture of the couple's current relationship, telling People that Kardashian and West's recent divorce rumors aren't "accurate" and claimed, "There are frustrations and problems, like any relationship, but they love each other deeply." Bustle has reached out to Kardashian's rep for comment, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic or just a blind optimist, but I'm more inclined to believe that second statement than the first one. And much of that is because of how steadily the divorce rumors have plagued the couple's relationship ever since they got married. And whether any of these rumors have been even remotely close to the truth or not, it's still easy to identify the resilience at work in Kimye's relationship. The fact that they're still together trying to make their marriage work through the insecurities of external speculation and the potential tribulations of internal strife is worthy of some respect.

After all, it only took a few months worth of apparent wedded bliss before the first serious round of divorce rumors started following the couple. In July 2014, various rumors alleged that the marriage was doomed before it had even had a chance to get properly started, with In Touch claiming that Kardashian felt West was neglecting his family for his music career.

By November of that year, and after more speculation about their marriage spread across gossip sites, a representative for Kardashian told E! Online that there was "nothing wrong" with their relationship and called all of the rabid speculation "nonsense." It's worth remembering that it was around this time that West posted beautiful tributes to Kardashian on Twitter and the two were also seen out and about in public as a seemingly happy couple.

Not that any of these things made much of a dent in reducing the amount of rumors concerning their apparently imminent divorce. In March 2015, In Touch reported that their marriage was "definitely falling apart" and even featured a headline ridiculously similar to the one released by US Weekly on Tuesday: "Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are getting a divorce, just not right now." Which feels about as breaking news as stating that I'm likely going to die someday, but just not yet.

Before long, it felt as though every aspect of their individual lives became a suspicious precursor to an eventual split. West went partying without his wife? Kardashian allegedly wanted a divorce. Kardashian was mega pregnant and not having a fun time? West supposedly wanted a divorce. But the more that these rumors become prevalent, the less respectable they become. When you start reading about how Kardashian and West are breaking up on a weekly basis, their split becomes the-divorce-that-cried-wolf. Except neither of them appear to be perpetuating that howl — it's always "insiders" and "anonymous sources."

In 2016, of course, these rumors have been circling at their loudest and most damning. Between Kardashian's terrifying Paris robbery and West's recent hospitalization and canceled tour dates, there's been plenty for gossip sites to chew on. But as their relationship has proved through the many merciless headlines regarding the status of their marriage, it's stronger than everyone has perhaps anticipated.

Whether this new, particular rumor turns out to be true, or whether it's just another in a long line of false headlines, there's no denying that Kimye has managed to stay strong against whatever obstacles their marriage has experienced thus far.

Despite being in the public eye and sharing so much with the world, it's also clear that few people seem to know nearly as much as they think they may do about these two celebrities. And as such, the rest of their relationship may just surprise everybody, too.
