Gigi Hadid Is About To Take A Social Media Break

by Nicole Pomarico

If you follow Gigi Hadid on Twitter and Instagram, you might notice she's missing from your feed for about a month. It's official: Hadid is taking a break from social media, and as much as I'm going to miss following along with her adventures, it sounds like she's really looking forward to it. During an event on Wednesday, the 21-year-old talked to People about her plans to take time off from sharing her life with her followers, and it's such a positive step from her that everyone could probably benefit from doing the same.

According to Hadid herself, she wants to use the time to take a break from the negativity she regularly encounters online, and to focus on her career, minus the social media aspect of it. She's right — it's a useful tool, but sometimes, enough is enough, and it's awesome that Hadid has not only recognized that fact but that she plans to act on it. I can imagine how hurtful rude comments from total strangers can be, and it seems like the perfect time for her to take a step back and not allow that kind of negative energy in her life for awhile.

Hadid told People:

"I’m going to take a break when I feel like it and when I come back and share it with you if you want to be supportive and still follow me I’m so grateful for that. But if you’re going to be negative or be upset that I had to be human for a month than maybe I don’t want your follow anyway. I’m so grateful for social media because it’s given me so much more in my career, but I also really respect my career without the social media aspect. And I really want to still pay most of the attention to my job as a craft and not lose the art in it and the relationships that are meaningful to me not because of the money or the contracts but because of how I inspired designers and how they inspire me. I want to go back to focusing on that kind of relationship within fashion when I go to work for the next month."

She also added that a break like this one is "for everyone," not just celebrities, and I couldn't agree with her more. Social media is obviously a totally different experience for people in the public eye than it is for the rest of us. As a writer, I occasionally receive rude tweets about my work, but it's definitely not on the same scale that Hadid and other celebrities must face. In that situation, a break is probably an absolute necessity, but the rest of us could definitely benefit, too. You don't have to be a Victoria's Secret angel to feel overwhelmed by information overload, and if the rest of us could manage to tear ourselves away from Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat long enough to realize it, we'd probably all feel a lot better about our lives and ourselves.

Because at the end of the day, how important is it actually to share a photo of your cat every time she does something cute? OK, for me, it's pretty important, but I could still stand to turn my phone off and spend more time with my family and appreciating the many other things life has to offer.

Good for you, Hadid! I'll miss her gorgeous Instagram posts, but she'll be back — and hopefully, she'll be more refreshed than ever.
