What Steven Avery’s 2016 Looked Like In Photos

by Maya Parthasarathy

Filmmakers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi's crime documentary, Making a Murderer — a docuseries which took 10 years to make — became ubiquitous in 2016, both among crime enthusiasts and the typical Netflix viewer. Believe it or not, it's been an entire year since its release. So what did Making a Murderer 's Steven Avery's 2016 look like?

Both Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, who was convicted alongside Avery for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, went through a lot this year. Dassey's conviction was overturned, and he was told he was being released, only to find out that he'll likely have to stay in prison while the state of Wisconsin's prosecutors retry him for the same crime.

Avery went through some issues of his own — his former fiancée Jodi Stachowski declared shortly after Making a Murderer was released that she believes he is guilty in an interview with HLN. (Stachowski had previously defended Avery during footage included in the documentary.) Avery became engaged again to Lynn Hartman after a correspondence by mail, but he broke it off with her, calling her a "gold digger" after her appearance on the Dr. Phil Show, according to the Independent.

Let's take a look at some of the big moments in Avery's life this year through photos.

Jodi Stachowski Says Avery Is Guilty

Avery's former fiancée Stachowski called Avery a "monster" and disputed the truth of what is portrayed in the documentary. Avery responded by sending Stachowski a handwritten letter, which included sentences like "How much money Jodi get to talk bad!" and "The state $," according to Us Weekly.

Avery's Twin Sons Share Their Feelings

Avery's twin sons, Bill and Steven Jr., sat down for an interview with Crime Watch Daily. Bill said he doesn't think Avery killed Halbach, while Steven Jr. said, "I have no idea... Only one person can answer that and that is Teresa. But she can't answer it no more."

Avery Got Engaged To Hartman

Hartman, a legal secretary, reportedly got in touch with Avery after watching Making a Murderer, and the two corresponded by mail and over the phone, according to the Daily Mail.

Avery's Ex-Fiancée Expresses Doubt

Sandra Greenman, Avery's reported ex-fiancée and now friend, expressed doubt in why Hartman would want to be with Avery, according to the Daily Mail. "She's very pretty, there's no way she'd want Steven Avery usually," she told the Daily Mail. "All the family are afraid of her, something isn't right, I know she wants fame, and she's looking for money," he claimed. Hartman denied these claims.

Avery And Hartman Break Up

Well, you already know how this one went. Hartman went on Dr. Phil, and Avery called her a "gold digger."

Dassey Almost Gets Released

After his conviction was overturned, Dassey reportedly gave all his possessions away, according to the Daily Mail — apparently other inmates gave his possessions back when he found out he wouldn't be leaving just then after all.

Avery's "Best Friend" Speaks Up

It's unfortunate that most coverage of Avery's personal life comes from tabloids, but apparently Avery has a 22-year-old best friend named Curtis Busse, and Avery is the godfather of Busse's 1-year-old daughter, Jordan, the Daily Mail reported. According to Busse, Avery wants to have another child and go back to working at Avery's Auto Salvage Yard in Wisconsin.

It's clearly been a big year for Avery, Dassey, and their respective friends and families. We'll have to see how 2017 turns out for them — and learn more about whether Dassey and Avery really were "made" into murderers or not, as they claim.
