Ed Sheeran's New Single "Sing" Is Going To Be Big

by Alex Kritselis

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran just premiered his new single, “Sing,” online, and I have a feeling it’s going to be a massive hit. Co-written and produced by the man of the moment, Pharrell, “Sing” is a much different sound than we’re used to hearing from Sheeran. Unlike tracks like “The A Team” and “Lego House,” “Sing” is driven by big beats and a funky, danceable groove (but don’t worry – Sheeran’s trademark guitar didn’t go anywhere). On the song’s first verse, Sheeran's lyrics are about wanting to get away from a crowded party to be alone with a girl:

It’s late in the evening, glass on the side

I’ve been sat with you for most of the night

Ignoring everybody here, we wish they would disappear

So maybe we could get down now

Whoa, things just got a little sexy! The lyrics heat up even more during the chorus, where Sheeran dons a falsetto reminiscent of Justin Timberlake’s:

I need you darlin’, c’mon set the tone

If you feel you’re fallin’, won’t you let me know?

If you love me, c’mon get involved

Feel it rushin’ through you from your head to toe

And then a strange man’s voice commands, “Sing!” and the track explodes into an ultra-catchy refrain of “Ohhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohhh’s.” I’ve always thought of Sheeran as this wholesome, sweet guy. I mean, he toured with Taylor Swift! But “Sing” shows off a much more adult side of the 23-year-old singer. He even raps on the song’s second verse about having “something to drink and maybe something to smoke.” My, my.

Sheeran, who recently earned the title of “Britain’s least glamorous heartthrob” according to Billboard, reportedly worked on several songs with Pharrell, so we may hear even more music like “Sing” on his upcoming second studio album. I have to say, the R&B vibe works for Sheeran.

I think he’s got a major hit on his hands. Check out “Sing” via Sheeran’s official YouTube channel below.
