Debbie Harry Opens Up About Bisexuality

by Rachel Semigran

Punk icon and frontwoman of the legendary band Blondie, Debbie Harry just declared her bisexuality in an interview with The Daily Mail. She spoke openly about her past relationships with women and noted that, "women are more sensual." Though she admitted to having love affairs with women, she did comment that her most enduring relationships have been with men, including Blondie bandmate Chris Stein.

Her coming out is not the first statement Harry has made about her place in the LGBT community. Blondie was asked to perform at the Sochi olympics and they immediately refused due to Russia's staunch and violent stance on homosexality. "Why make such a big thing out of a personal choice or a natural instinct? It seems barbaric and idiotic," she commented.

Harry's frankess not only aligns with her political views, but with her opinions on love and female sexuality as well. At 68-years-young, Harry still remains the honest, open-hearted romantic that reads throughout her band's entire catalog. On the subject of falling in love again and finding her ideal match, she commented, "I don’t know if I have any specific requirements..Just somebody nice, who has a good sense of humour and loves to have sex. What more could you ask for?" Not much, Debbie, not much at all. In fact, I think most of us would whole-heartedly concur with that sentiment.

Though Harry was criticized in the 70s for her overt sexuality when Blondie first came on the screen, she makes no apologies. In fact, Harry has a very sex-positive attitude. When asked about the hyper-sexualized nature of today's pop stars, she noted, "I think they’re entitled to do what they feel or what they think is going to work for them. And I think they look good." Because, you know, we needed just a few more reasons to bleach our hair blonde, rock bright red lippy, and rock a leather bomber jacket in honor of this most legendary, pro-women artist.
