This Kanye Song Should Really Offend Kim

by Alex Kritselis

Future and Kanye West really love their fiancées, Ciara and Kim Kardashian. Well, they really love their bodies and having sex with them, anyway. That’s how the story goes on Future and West's brand new song, “I Won.” Future spells things out nicely for us on the track’s opening verse:

I just want to take you out and show you off

You already know that you the perfect one

Girl when I’m with you, feel like a champion

Ever since I got with you I feel like I done won me a trophy

He then repeats the hook, “A trophy, I won me a trophy” several thousand times for emphasis. Future and West may actually have feelings for the women in their lives, but you wouldn’t know it from “I Won.” Future doesn’t love Ciara’s independent drive or her creative mind; West doesn’t love Kardashian’s…entrepreneurial spirit, no. The rappers spend most of the song dissecting their fiancés’ bodies piece-by-piece and talking about how much they enjoy fucking them. They are, after all, just trophies: hunks of gold-plated plastic to be ogled and “treasured” for a while, but then put away on a shelf to collect dust once you've become bored. Future continues:

I know that ass gettin’ fatter and I know it’s because of me

I know it’s because of me, got you in custody

Okay, so not only is Ciara Future’s trophy, I guess she’s also his prisoner? Cool. Granted, the appeal of Future’s auto-tuned wailing is totally lost on me, but I feel like I can say fairly objectively that in addition to being pretty offensive, this isn't even a good verse. It’s repetitive and predictable. In terms of skill, West is obviously the better, more accomplished rapper, but his contribution to the song is no less problematic:

I want to dip that ass in gold, I want to dip that ass in gold

I made it over NBA, NFL players

So every time I score it’s like the Super Bowl

Baby, we should hit the south of France

So you could run around without them pants

My trophy on that “Bound” bike, I gave you only pipe

It goes on like that. (Did you catch West’s not-so-sly dig at Kardashian’s exes, Kris Humphries and Reggie Bush?) If Future and West's intent was to make their partners feel cherished, appreciated, and respected, they failed miserably. If the only way you know how to express your love for a woman is by objectifying her body and making stale, immature comments about your wealth and sexual prowess, frankly, you’ve got a lot to learn.

Any song with West’s name attached to it is going to attract a lot of attention, but make no mistake: “I Won” is a dud, both thematically and musically. I hope listeners will see right through this tired exercise in ego stroking. If you’re really curious, you can check out “I Won” via YouTube below — but I wouldn’t recommend it.
