Why 'Veronica Mars' Could Be the Next 'Saw'

by Kate Ward

Veronica Mars might just be the next Saw. Meaning, in a few year's time, you might get sick of the charming Kristen Bell-starrer that fans revived earlier this year with a successful Kickstarter project.

The cast — including Bell, Enrico Colantoni, and Tina Majorino — gathered at San Diego's Comic-Con Friday to talk about the upcoming project, which, if you ask creator Rob Thomas, might not be the last. "I want to be a Bond franchise," Thomas said about Veronica Mars' future.

And it certainly seems like the dearly departed CW series is gearing up to become a franchise. Not only will the film be released in 2014, but Alloy Entertainment announced it signed with Vintage Books to create two Veronica Mars novels.

But what, exactly, will they center on? After all, it's been six years since we've been known the whereabouts of our favorite high school detective's whereabouts. On Friday, however, Comic-Con's panel shed a bit of light on Mars' 2013 life — according to a teaser-trailer attendees were treated to, Mars is now a big-city lawyer in New York City. "I can tell you that it sort of has a Godfather III theme, which seems odd," said Thomas during the panel. "Why not pick Godfather II, a better movie? She has not worked as a private investigator since the last time you saw her in Season 3. Part of the movie is her getting pulled back into this life she thought she left behind."

But, of course, there was likely a reason the Godfather franchise ended after the maligned third film in the trilogy — it's difficult for any franchise to sustain a long series of films. So will Veronica Mars be a Saw, a Godfather, or a Bond? Since the former private investigator has most in common with 007, here's hoping Veronica Mars stirs us like the martini-loving spy.
