2014 Met Ball Fashion Predictions
The 2014 Met Ball is fast approaching, and with it a thousand fashion commentators getting ready to flex their critical muscles at the range of exquisite and absurd ensembles on the red carpet. The Met Costume Institute announced its theme on Tuesday, celebrating U.S. couturier Charles James with a "White Tie and Decorations" theme. If you're perplexed by theme, you may not be the only one. WWD clarified the formal attire requirement, stating that men will be expected to arrive in "a black tailcoat, waistcoat, a wing collar shirt and a white bow tie", as well as some strategically placed pins and badges. Could it be that the Met is finally creating a male-centric theme? Or perhaps last year's punk motif was simply too exhausting for guests. In any case, we anticipate celebrities putting on the ritz and getting their glam on for the gala, and we have predictions for what may be worn to this most glitzy of occasions.
Marc Jacobs Fall 2014
It may look hard to pull off for us mere mortals, but we have a feeling that Anne Hathway could — and would — work it.
Taylor Swift
Taylor loves a silver gown for the red carpet like this gorgeous Grammy’s gown almost as much as she loves calling out her ex-boyfriends for their misdeeds.
Ralph Lauren Fall 2014
The beauty is in the details of this intricately draped, flowing gown–perfect for Taylor Swift’s graceful entrée to the Met Ball.
Rihanna
Rihanna is always up for a daring gown, and favors figure-hugging, sheer ensembles like this gown for the 2011 Met Ball.
Pamella Roland Fall 2014
Go big or go home doesn’t even begin to describe the extravagant attitude of Met Ball style, and this glitzy, transparent number perfectly evokes the night’s glamour for a star like Rihanna.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Though her style has become more covered lately, Sarah Jessica Parker loved a good floral ball gown with a gorgeous skirt like this dress from the 2013 Met Gala.
Monique Lhuillier Fall 2014
Carrie Bradshaw would most certainly give this floral stunner a thumbs-up, and it would be perfect for the actress who once played her character.
Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett loves a slightly idiosyncratic ensemble with glamour to spare, as with her 2005 Valentino Oscar gown.
Jenny Packham Fall 2014
Jenny Packham’s rouge ’40s-inspired gown has Cate Blanchett’s name all over it.
Gisele Bundchen
Gisele adores a bright gown with a bit of a train, as she demonstrated in Vintage McQueen at the 2011 Met Gala.
Zac Posen Fall 2014
This classically exquisite Zac Posen gown evokes Charles James’ designs: vibrant swaths of satin cut to show off a beautiful figure like Gisele’s.
Miranda Kerr
Our favorite ex-Victoria’s Secret Angel loves a flowing chiffon dress for the red carpet.
J. Mendel Fall 2014
This diaphanous gown is just begging to have a star like Miranda Kerr to wear it down the red carpet.
Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington loves a little sparkle and a deep v neckline, and her baby bump hasn’t slowed down the actress’s chic impulses.
Dennis Basso Fall 2014
If Kerry Washington’s pre-baby style is any indication, this plunge-neckline, gilded Dennis Basso number could be right up her alley.
Carey Mulligan
Carey Mulligan has razor-sharp sense of style with a beautifully feminine edge, and loved a strapless gown with clean lines and unexpected colors or pattern.
Marchesa Fall 2014
This architectural, gilded dress is perfect for Carey.
Jennifer Lopez
J. Lo loves to show off her curves with glittering and intricately patterned gowns, as with this Zuhair Murad Met Gala gown.
Elie Saab Fall 2014
Jennifer Lopez’s glamorous style would be displayed perfectly in this shimmering Elie Saab gown.
