Is That You, Emma?

by Mary Avant

With Emma Stone's gorgeous looks, stunning red hair, hilarious sense of humor, impressive acting chops, ridiculously cute boyfriend, and nearly flawless sense of style, what’s not to love? I've really come to appreciate this last factor during her time in the spotlight, as the actress has grown into a veritable fashion icon thanks to her knack for picking fabulous looks that are glamorous and sexy enough to draw a lot of much-deserved attention, but girly and feminine enough to steer away from looking overly mature and stuffy.

That’s why I was shocked to see the latest ensemble the redhead donned to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 photo call in London yesterday. Rocking a borrowed-from-the-boys look more likely to come from boyfriend and co-star Andrew Garfield’s closet than from Stone’s, the actress showed off a new level of edge that she's never rocked before. From the boxy boyfriend cut and double-breasted blazer style to the gray check pattern and cropped trousers, Stone’s Saint Laurent suit was the perfect pick for a day spent in classic fashion–loving London.

Styling the look with a crisp, white button down; minimal black pumps; sleek, side-swept hair; and subtly smoky, gray eyeshadow, Stone somehow managed to look androgynous, edgy, and ultra-chic all at once.

Surprised as I was at her menswear-inspired look, I should have known Stone would throw a bolder outfit our way on her next stop in the Amazing Spider-Man 2 press tour. After all, when she’s not wearing casual-chic, flowing ensembles, she’s been opting for outfits — like the sharply tailored Balenciaga vest she wore in Singapore — that are a little more structured than her typical red-carpet choices.

It’s also not the first time she’s worn a trendy suit over the last several months, as she showed up to a press event just last November wearing a dark gray menswear look. But rather than the sharp, buttoned-up ensemble she sported in London, that outfit — with its fitted blazer; casual, blue button down; baggy, cropped pants; and bright red heels — was noticeably more laid back.

In the end, no matter what style she picks — whether it’s an out-of-the box menswear look or a delightfully delicate dress — I'm just happy to have the chance to admire her red carpet fashion once again.
