Cory Booker to Announce His N.J. Senate Campaign

by Katherine Johnson

It comes as no surprise, especially if you've followed his tweets for the last few months: Newark's Mayor Cory Booker will run to fill New Jersey's vacant Senate seat.

According to the Washington Post, Booker plans to officially announce his campaign for Senate on Saturday. He'll run as a Democrat. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ordered a special election to be held October 16 to fill the seat that was held by Senator Frank Lautenberg, who died on Monday.

Who are Booker's opponents? In the primary, scheduled for August 13, the mayor will face two fellow Democrats for the bid, Congressman Frank Pallone and Congressman Rush Holt. The G.O.P. field is still slim; the lone Republican candidate is Steve Lonegan. (Fun facts: New Jersey Republicans haven't won a Senate race in more than 40 years.)
