Hoffman's Last Starring Role Is Here

When Philip Seymour Hoffman tragically passed away in February, he had five projects in which he was set to appear: the final two Hunger Games movies, a film called God's Pocket, a television series for Showtime titled Happy-ish, and A Most Wanted Man which had its first trailer released on Friday. A Most Wanted Man will mark Philip Seymour Hoffman's final starring role when it hits theaters on July 25.

The film is based on the book of the same name by spy novelist John le Carré, who also wrote books-turned-films Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and The Constant Gardener. Hoffman plays Günther Bachmann a spy in Hamburg, Germany who works to "expose a network of illicit terrorist funding being run out of Germany," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hoffman's costars include Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright, Willen Dafoe, and Daniel Brühl. The film is directed by Anton Corbijn and is the former photographer's third feature following Control and The American.

The trailer makes A Most Wanted Man look nothing if not intense. We get Hoffman with a German accent saying intimidating lines like "It takes a minnow to catch a barracuda, a barracuda to catch a shark" as well as that old spy movie standby: the giant wall of photos and clues.

The film premiered at Sundance in January and has already gotten great reviews. In particular, and not surprisingly, Hoffman has been highly praised for his role. Variety 's reviewer wrote, "First among equals in the fine ensemble, Hoffman brings a superbly world-weary quality to the role of Bachmann."

A Most Wanted Man won't be for everyone — if you don't like spy thrillers, you don't like spy thrillers — but if you're a fan of le Carré or want to see another excellent performance from Hoffman, it sounds like a safe bet.
