'Mrs. Doubtfire' Is Getting a Sequel

by Caroline Pate

Can't get enough of '90s nostalgia? Well it's your lucky day, because they're remaking Mrs. Doubtfire , the classic story of man divorces wife, man loses kids, man poses as a Scottish nanny to get closer to kids. Robin Williams originally starred in the film as an out-of-work actor who transforms himself into the responsible Euphegenia Doubtfire, and he's set to reprise his role in the sequel. It's unknown if fellow actors Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan or '90s child stars Mara Wilson and Matthew Lawrence will return.

The original is certainly pretty dated — its attitude towards trans women and drag is less than progressive, and it's a veritable treasure trove of cheesy '90s scenes (remember the best birthday party you wish you had, where Robin Williams was dancing on a table to "Jump Around"?). But it's a movie that helped a lot of young '90s kids deal with divorce, and its got a big, beating heart at its core. So it's perfect that David Berenbaum, who wrote Elf's script, is penning the sequel. Chris Columbus, who directed the original, is set to direct.

Mrs. Doubtfire was a huge box office success when it opened in 1993, and a sequel has been in the works since 2001. Bonnie Hunt wrote the sequel script originally, but it went through several re-writes and was seemingly indefinitely scrapped in 2006. The original plot had Mrs. Doubtfire moving closer to his daughter's college to keep an eye on her, but Williams was unhappy with this version of the script. Chris Columbus picked up the conversation again last year, and it seems that they've finally found a script that all parties are happy with.

No word on what the new plot is, but until the sequel's released, just imagine a parallel universe in which Mrs. Doubtfire is a horror movie...
