The 'Playing House' Pilot Is Online

by Kristie Rohwedder

This morning, a tweet stopped me in my tracks. I read it, re-read it, and then dropped my spoon in my bowl of Cinnamon Puffins. (I'm not exaggerating. Milk splattered everywhere. It was chaos.) Jessica St. Clair announced that the Playing House pilot is now available on USA Network’s website. AHHHHH! How long has it been on the Internet?!?! I’ve been counting down the days until the Playing House premiere date (April 29, snitches!), and watching the pilot before the show airs felt sort of like being allowed to eat all of the chocolate from an advent calendar at once (without the sugar rush and crash, of course). What a dream.

How did I like the pilot? Uh, it ruled. Man, I’ve missed seeing St. Clair and Lennon Parham’s faces on my TV screen. I’m stoked to watch the pilot again on April 29, and I'm stoked to watch the second episode on April 29 as well. Back-to-back eps? Yes, please.

The pilot sets the stage for the series: Emma (St. Clair) returns to her hometown for Maggie's (Parham) baby shower, shit hits the fan with Maggie's marriage, and Emma makes a major life decision.

The pilot also sets the stage for how obsessed I'm going to be with the show. Oh, right. I'm already obsessed with it. Why'd I love the pilot so dearly? One million reasons, coming right up! Okay, fine. I'll pare down my list. Here are six reasons the pilot affected me the way it did:

The BFFs are Back!

Have no fear, Best Friends Forever fans. Parham and St. Clair are here! And they're as wonderful as ever. The show isn't BFFs v. 2.0 (it's its own thing!), but it has the Parham/St. Clair chemistry fans know and love. What more could you want?

“Celebrate These Boobs”

+100 for a boob-themed Kenny Loggins song parody. +100 for the harmonizing. +100 for Emma singing to Maggie's boobs.

Hedgehog cupcakes

There are cupcakes decorated to look like hedgehogs at the baby shower. So cute. Cannot breathe. Must find hedgehog cupcakes IRL ASAP.

It's Really, Really Funny

The writing is hilarious, and the cast only elevates it. Also? There are poop jokes. Poop jokes are the best.

It has heart

I laughed a lot throughout the pilot, but I also felt a lot of mushy feelings. The scene in the playhouse? Augh. The moment when Maggie realizes Emma is more supportive than her husband will ever be? AUGH. As anyone who's watched BFFs will tell ya, Parham and St. Clair's sentimental moments never feel forced. They're always earned, genuine, and beautiful scenes that'll compel you to text your own BFF.

The Last Scene

I adored the final shot of the ep: Two dear friends sweetly walking down the street together, Emma with a suitcase in hand (because she was planning on going to the airport). It's a pretty fitting image, really. Emma and Maggie are about to embark on a journey, and I can't wait to see it unfold.

What are you waiting for? Go check it out, ya hedgehog!
