Joss Whedon Can't Be Tamed

by Kadeen Griffiths

If Joss Whedon has a middle name, then it should be "I do what I want." (Apparently, it's Hill. Who knew?) He's the mind that gave the world Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, and hit-or-miss projects like Dollhouse and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Reactions to him range from silent awe, borderline blasphemous worship, and incoherent rage, the latter of which he continues to cultivate with his fondness for making you love a character right before he kills them. Whedon apologized to the city of Seoul for the disruption that filming The Avengers: Age of Ultron would cause, for heaven's sake. What's not to love? If you still need more reasons, Whedon made his indie film In Your Eyes available for screening on Vimeo Sunday night, right after it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Don't get me wrong. I am not a convert to the holy church of Whedonology. I still have yet to actually watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is blasphemous in and of itself. Joss Whedon just seems to get an inherent joy out of, well, doing whatever he wants. This is the man who was asked why he keeps writing such strong female characters and responded with, "Because you keep asking that question." This is the man who claimed that Disney lawyers were preventing him from showing a clip of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. at Comic-Con, so all they could show was the entire first episode. Even if you haven't watched half the shows he's famous for, you have to admit the guy has style.

The indie film, In Your Eyes, is a paranormal romance starring Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David as a wife and an ex-con with a strange connection. Whedon wasn't able to attend the premiere, but he appeared in a short message after the film announcing its online distribution. "This is exciting for us because it means we get to explore yet another new form of distribution and we get $5," jokes Whedon in the video.
