You Must Watch The Video for Kiesza's "Hideaway"

by Alex Kritselis

As U.S. pop fans gear up for big summer releases from artists like Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande, let’s take a look overseas at a song that’s just beginning to make some major waves. This week, Canadian artist Kiesza earned her first U.K. number one single with “Hideaway,” a catchy dance number with an infectious chorus, a thumping beat, and a seriously addictive music video. Big hits from the United Kingdom have a tendency to make their way stateside before too long (Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” for example), so you might want to stay ahead of the curve on this one and get into “Hideaway” now before it blows up. Just think: you can brag to all of your friends that you knew about the song way back when!

How the 25-year-old Kiesza ended up recording “Hideaway” is kind of an interesting story — she first discovered her love for music while working as a code breaker for the Royal Canadian Navy. She told Metro in a recent interview, “Music was always a part of my life, but it was more of a hobby. When I started sailing on large vessels, people would bring instruments onto the ship and start jamming, and that led me to start song writing. That was the first time that I realized I had a natural instinct for it, and it just led me down this whole musical road that I’m on.” Oh, and she’s a classically trained ballerina, as well. I guess you never really know where life is going to take you!

On “Hideaway,” Kiesza’s voice shimmers over the minimal, 90’s house-influenced production. As the beat slowly builds in the background, Kiesza sings about an all-consuming love that allows her to leave the world behind:

Takin’ me higher than I’ve ever been before

I’m holdin’ it back, just wanna shout out, “Gimme more!”

You’re just a hideaway, you’re just a feelin’

You let my heart escape beyond the meaning…

And then the track bursts into a killer dance breakdown reminiscent of C+C Music Factory’s “Just a Touch of Love” (you know, the song that plays during Sister Act 's iconic "clean up" montage).

But what makes “Hideaway” extra special is its fantastic music video. The concept is very simple: decked out in a white crop top, suspenders, ultra high-waisted acid wash jeans, and bright red sneakers (it’s a lot of look), the fiery Kiesza dances her way through graffiti-covered streets, occasionally stopping to rock out some synchronized choreography with different groups of people along the way. The video's especially cool because it's all one long, continuous shot.

I’ll admit, during the first 30 seconds, I was like, “This is kind of cheesy,” but then the brilliance of Kiesza’s retro dance moves totally won me over and I couldn’t look away. The more times I hit the “Replay” button on YouTube, the deeper the song became lodged in my brain. Before I knew it, I was doing the cabbage patch. Seriously, the song is so good.
