Selena Commits the Ultimate Crime

by Kadeen Griffiths

Selena Gomez is gaining a reputation as an unusual kind of heartbreaker. Instead of breaking the hearts of boyfriends, Gomez is breaking the hearts of her parents by firing them, breaking the hearts of her fans by not staying away from Justin Bieber, and breaking the heart of Taylor Swift by hanging out with other people. At the last Coachella weekend, those other people included Kendall and Kylie Jenner, with whom Gomez seemed very close. As with any member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, selfies abounded and all seemed well until Gomez unfollowed the Jenners on Instagram and deleted the pictures. And everyone lost their minds.

Social media has been serious business since it first became popular. How many relationships were ended because one partner forgot to change their relationship status on Facebook? How many people have been murdered because they unfriended someone? A mutual follow is pretty much the only way confirm that you even have friends nowadays. Forget that whole hanging out or talking on the phone thing. That's so '90s.

The question of the day appears to be why Gomez would unfollow the Jenners when she seemed so close with them last weekend. However, we're not sure if she was even following them to begin with. And Gomez is still following the Jenners on Twitter. And the number of people that Gomez was following dropped from the near 60s to 15 over the weekend. While it's easy to attribute the blame to some kind of feud with the Jenners, it's just as likely that her shift to new management comes with a little cleaning of house or that they weren't the designated targets in this mass friends cut.

Sure, it might be harsh to think that Kylie and Kendall Jenner didn't make it into Gomez's top 15, but hanging out at Coachella does not a forever friendship make. Gomez just (allegedly) unfollowed them on one website. She didn't throw a flaming bag of poop at their window. To say some sort of gauntlet is being thrown by the action seems more than a little premature when the reported cause — her reunion with Justin Bieber — hasn't even been confirmed yet. For all we know, it could have been a website glitch that removed her friends and Gomez is slowly finding the time to add them all back.

Then again, if Gomez did want to unfollow the Jenners, then she wouldn't have to fear for her life like so many in the news before her. It'd be a little hard for Kendall and Kylie Jenner to come after her with an ax what with those reality television show cameras following them around all the time.
