FX Wants to Hold On To a Good Thing

by Anna Klassen

Fargo is already one of the best show's on network television, and it's only aired one episode. The A-list laden series features Martin Freeman as the good boy gone bad, ultimate baddie Billy Bob Thorton, and Colin Hanks as the reluctant hero. The series opened to huge critical acclaim and huge audience numbers (around 6.3 million), so FX's latest deal is no surprise: FX snagged Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley for another two years. This means that while he will continue to be attached to Fargo, there's now pressure for Hawley to create new projects for the network.

FX president Eric Schrier put it plainly when he said: "As is evident by the universal acclaim and extraordinary reviews pouring in for Fargo, Noah Hawley is one of the most talented writer-producers in this business. His remarkable creative achievement with Fargo is a testament to his skill and ability. We look forward to continuing our relationship with him."

Hawley said of his masterpiece, "Making Fargo for FX has been the highlight of my career. A writer can search his or her whole career for a network partner who truly understands and encourages their vision. For me, the search is over. When John Landgraf announced ‘At FX, we'd rather make something great for somebody, than something good for everybody,’ I knew I'd found a home."

And while his statement sounds like a screaming request to plug FX, we have to agree with the showrunner. Perhaps Hawley + FX = the television partnership we've long been waiting for. If the pilot of Fargo is any indication, we think this may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
