Andy Samberg, Charlize Theron Head to 'SNL'

by Aly Semigran

Professional goofball and Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg has added two very prestigious titles to his name already this year: Golden Globe winner and now, Saturday Night Live host. It's been announced that the SNL alum, who was a major player on the cast from 2005 to 2012, Andy Samberg, will host this year's season finale with musical guest St. Vincent on May 17. (It was also announced that this season's penultimate episode will be hosted by Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, who will be accompanied by musical guests The Black Keys on May 10.)

Returning to host SNL is pretty much a rite of passage for former cast members turned solo superstars (everyone from Chris Rock to Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Dana Carvey to Molly Shannon have made their way back to Studio 8H) but the results can often be a mixed bag. Lucky for Samberg he has an entire arsenal of great SNL stuff to draw from during his hosting stint. There's, of course, "Laser Cats," "Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals," "Get in the Cage with Nicolas Cage," and a plethora of those wildly viral digital shorts, but we're willing to bet Samberg will bring some new stuff to the table, too.

Because we have some high hopes, here are some our favorite (and least favorite) episodes of SNL hosted by a former cast member.

Hit: Amy Poehler - September 25, 2010

Amy Poehler has popped up on SNL every now and then to lend her awesomeness, but nothing topped when she hosted back in 2010. With a little help from her friends, including fellow butt-kicking alum Maya Rudolph and musical guest Katy Perry for a hilarious revival of the "Bronx Beat" sketch, Poehler set the bar awfully high for Season 36 and any other returning host.

Miss: Kristen Wiig - May 11, 2013

As much as it pains us to say this, Kristen Wiig's return to SNL wasn't the most triumphant one. While we'll always love those disturbingly funny Lawrence Welk openers and "Aw Nuts, Mom's a Ghost!" was a treasure, we blame the return of the always-grating "Californians" and Garth and Kat for making this a night to forget.

Hit: Jimmy Fallon - December 17, 2011

In terms of sheer crowd-pleasers, no one can top host and returning guest Jimmy Fallon. Often accompanied by his best pal Justin Timberlake, Fallon's revived sketches and celebrity imitations are guaranteed to be a hit with SNL viewers. That said, his year-ending episode in 2011 with musical guest Michael Bublé was beginning-to-end great.

Miss: Tina Fey - September 28, 2013

This wasn't a bad episode, by any means. Plus it gave us that incredible Girls parody and the greatest Girls character that never was, Blerta. But the show didn't give Fey nearly enough to do with her incredible talents, and surprise guest Aaron Paul and musical guests Arcade Fire wound up stealing the show right from her.

Hit: Will Ferrell - May 16, 2009

One of the best SNL finales to date. Ferrell, with the help of musical guests Green Day and a couple of famous friends like Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hanks, and Maya Rudolph closed out the season with a show-stopping rendition of Billy Joel's "Goodnight Saigon."

Miss: Ben Stiller - October 8, 2011

Not even an appearance from Stefon could save this lackluster effort. Though, it's not entirely Stiller's fault. Around this time it was rumored fellow former cast member Eddie Murphy might make peace with the show and come back to SNL for a visit, but when it didn't happen, the whole thing felt like a big build-up to nothing.

Hit: Maya Rudolph - February 18, 2012

Like Jimmy Fallon, Maya Rudolph knocked her hosting stint out of the park. Sure, she had plenty of friends stop by to make the night special (Amy Poehler, Justin Timberlake, among others) but the star held her own and gave us the world's greatest impression of Maya Angelou playing pranks that we never knew we so desperately needed in our lives.

Before we see how Samberg fares a host (Theron has hosted before), Andrew Garfield hosts the next new SNL episode (with musical guests Coldplay) for his first time on May 3.
