This 'OUAT' Couple Taught Us About Love

by Christine DiStasio

Once Upon A Time has a lot of trouble with romance — what with Emma still not dating Hook and all. But one relationship that has no trouble and is actually a great example of how to be a couple is the relationship between Snow White and Prince Charming. Sure, their real life counterparts, Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas, are married and expecting so they kind of have a leg up but they really do have it all together. And considering the constant obstacles they've had to face — like putting their child in a magic tree and sending her to another world — they're setting a pretty damn great example for how to be in a relationship.

A lot of what attracts me to the relationship that Snow White and Charming have on OUAT is that they're equals — in kicking ass, in their dark and light moments, and in being generally good human beings. But on a more serious note, Charming appreciates Snow for all that she is and isn't threatened at all by her being a tough, independent woman that can wield any weapon like a pro. In fact, they're a perfect team that balance each other out regularly on the show to the point where it's blatantly obvious that Charming's wannabe fiancée from the first season was so not in his league.

So what can we learn from the relationship that survived being on the LAM, two curses, one lost child, and a series of near-fatal accidents? Here are five lessons from Charming and Snow on how to be an awesome couple that can handle just about anything:

1. Teamwork Is Important

In the kitchen, during a battle in the woods, when parenting your long-lost child — being a team and functioning like a well-oiled machine is imperative to having a great relationship. And considering all of the craziness Snow and Charming have gone through since they met while Snow was Public Enemy #1 of the Forbidden Forest, this aspect of their relationship is tried and true.

2. Never Give Up

I mean, think about it — these two were separated for years by a curse that made them completely forget about their relationship and the fact that they had a child together. And before that, they dealt with being fugitives from the Evil Queen who wanted both of their heads on platters. But here they are, in the strongest possible version of their relationship after getting through all of that drama.

3. Pile On The Romance

Sorry not sorry, Emma, but your parents are a little too young to turn down the heat on their romance. Remember this great moment when Emma and Henry walked in on Charming and Snow and they tried to play it off like that were "resting." HA. But in all seriousness, Snow and Charming are all about the romance and keeping their chemistry alive. And look at how happy they are, people.

4. Big Decisions Should Be Made Together

I mean, they had to put their baby in a magic tree and trust that things would just work out for her. That's a huge decision and thankfully, these two were able to figure it out together. Snow is a lot more impulsive than Charming, while her partner is a little more into planning and assessing the options. So when it comes time to make a decision about whether or not they're going into battle or whether or not to trust the man that's telling you to put you child in a magic tree (honestly, every time I type this I realize how damn crazy it is that they went through with this).

5. You Have To Fight For True Love

This is pretty self-explanatory, but for all of you people out there that think that love isn't something that needs work, let Snow and Charming teach you a thing or two. Sure, they're soul mates and they found their true love, but they do work on a daily basis to keep it all together. Negligence doesn't make for a great relationship.
