Bad News for Mr. Depp

by Alanna Bennett

Welp, this isn't great news for Johnny Depp: Transcendence is tanking at the box office. Like, seriously tanking. Bombing, flopping, etc. It ain't pretty. The film — which stars Depp as a man working "toward his goal of creating an omniscient, sentient machine" — opened in theaters April 18. Its opening weekend it grossed $10 million, and its current gross is hovering at $14.4 million domestically. So far, it seems like the studio's likely to lose at least $30 million for a movie who's budget was $100 million. That's quite a difference from the result the production studio, Alcon, saw with The Blind Side in 2009 — that one was made for just under $30 million and raked in a box office of over $300 million.

The whole thing's a pretty big blow for Alcon, whose co-president told The Wrap that he is "mortified" by the film's performance.

Depp's landed some pretty big wins for studio box offices throughout his many decades in Hollywood, so the chances of this drastically diminishing his capital seem slim. Still, he's not quite the Depp we all grew to adore throughout the '90s and early 2000s, so it's possible his draw alone just isn't as strong an indicator of quality for audiences anymore. We can probably at least partially blame The Lone Ranger for that.
