Behold: The Second Coming of Meat Loaf

by Laura Rosenfeld

It's the moment we've all been waiting for. Remember way back when Ryan Seacrest told us to tweet song suggestions at American Idol contestants using "#IdolRequest"? Well get ready, because on Wednesday night's episode, we'll finally get to hear what songs America has chosen for the top five. While it'll be interesting to see who ends up with what, we hope it's finally time for Idol's Caleb Johnson to rock out to some Meat Loaf.

Comparisons to the iconic singer known for his powerhouse vocals on songs such as "Paradise By the Dashboard Light," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," and "I'd Do Anything for Love," poured in as soon as Johnson appeared on Idol. Fellow Idol contestant Jessica Meuse even once called Johnson the lovechild of Jack Black and Meat Loaf. And it's easy to see why. Johnson's long locks, burly frame, and rocking performances are so reminiscent of Meat Loaf, it's scary. Here's why we do a double take every week to make sure Johnson isn't really the legendary rocker.

He Looks Like Meat Loaf

If it were possible to have an identical twin be 43 years younger than you, we would definitely mistake Johnson for Meat Loaf all the time. He's got pretty much the same long, brown hair that Meat Loaf sported in his prime. With his heavy build, Meat Loaf helped pave the way for plus-sized singers like Johnson to find success in rock 'n' roll. It even seems like Johnson has taken a page out of the Meat Loaf style book, wearing suit jackets and fancy buttoned-down shirts to dress for success.

He Sings Like Meat Loaf

Johnson has carved out a spot among the other Idol contestants as the rock guy. Just like Meat Loaf, his specialty is the power ballad. Johnson gave a soulful rendition of "Stay With Me," he epically nailed Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory," and he solidified America's loyalty to him with Journey's "Faithfully" (above). The only way Johnson's performances could get any more perfect is if he performs with Meat Loaf in the finale. (Hint, hint, Idol producers.)

He Acts Like Meat Loaf

Johnson's similarities to Meat Loaf run deep. When he's on stage, it seems like he's channeling Meat Loaf and embodies his mannerisms perfectly. Like Meat Loaf, Johnson is a high-energy performer not afraid to get a little sweaty on stage. He's a fan of picking up his mic stand, like when he performed "Dazed and Confused," and feeds off the energy of his duet partners, such as when he sang "Gimme Shelter" with Jena Irene. Last week, Johnson performed The Black Crowes' "Sting Me" (above) and his mic actually slipped out of his hands. Like the pro that he is, he made it a part of the show, slid on his knees and caught the mic just in time to sing the next lyrics. Meat Loaf would definitely be proud of that showmanship.
