Something's About Selena Is Different...

by Lia Beck

Selena Gomez has recently been making moves that seem to prove she is taking her singing career more seriously. She posted a cryptic excerpt from a Mary J. Blige review to Instagram, fired her parents and hired Katy Perry's manager, and ditched her young and crazy friends for Orlando Bloom (?!?!?!). And now it seems that Gomez has maybe been making another important change. Selena Gomez posted two video of herself singing on Instagram on Thursday and while some were quick to point out that the lyrics may be about Justin Bieber (blah, boring!), but there's something else that's very apparent: her voice. Gomez sounds great! I'm thinking another one of her big changes was some good old fashioned singing lessons.

In the videos Gomez sings Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like a Star" with piano accompaniment. Now it's possible that Gomez's voice just happens to lend itself better to a soulful sound than a peppy pop song, but that seems unlikely. Maybe she just has trouble when she dances and sings at the same time. (Remember this Movie Awards performance? That was a lot of choreography.)

The dancing could be a contributor, but that theory doesn't explain everything. As a point of comparison to her new Instagram videos, first check out Gomez singing live — and it very clearly is actually live — in 2011 on Good Morning America:

And here are the videos Gomez posted on Thursday:

Her voice sounds deeper and more substantial and other words that explain a better voice that a music expert would use. If Gomez has been using the free time she has now that she isn't hanging out with those Jenner girls to take some vocal lessons, they're obviously paying off. More power to her on that front, but I can't pretend I'll ever understand the Orlando Bloom thing.
