Can You Relate to 'House of Cards' Guilt Watching?

by Alicia Lutes

I have something to admit: I am a total Penelope. That is to say, the 'Penelope' of which Brett Domino sings — an obsessive TV watcher (hey, it's my job!) that cannot seem to stop recommending television shows to anyone and everyone who will listen. Sometimes aggressively so (...have you started Orphan Black yet?). If you or someone you love has a problem with binge-watching everything on television and then imploring you partaking in their extreme, obsessive love — this is the song for you.

"Penelope (Please Stop Recommending So Many TV Dramas)," is Domino's lovingly frank ode to folks just like that. No, there may be no actual, real-life girl named Penelope ("[I don't] actually know anyone called Penelope - it's just a musical device," the singer stated) in his life, but there are probably plenty of Penelopes he knows. As likely do you! As he explained it, the song is aimed at anyone and everyone who tries to force, and sometimes guilt, their friends into watching Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead , and whatever show-du-jour is sparking up the Interwaves at the moment. He even managed to lace a bit of that slight judgemental air that us Penelopes — admit it! — can sometimes take on ("What do you mean you've never seen The Wire?"). I'd like to go on record saying that I, too, have never seen The Wire or Walking Dead so I suppose this could all be worse then, couldn't it?

Take a listen to the ditty below and feel free to share it with any of the mind-bendingly TV-able Penelopes in your life.
