Everyone Loves the Tonys More Than the Oscars

by Kate Ward

Watch out, Oscars 2014 — you have some big shoes to fill. Following a rousing opening number from Neil Patrick Harris and one of the most progressive awards shows to hit the small screen, the Internet has rendered a verdict: It likes the Tonys much, much more than the Oscars.

Not only did the Tonys 2013 make Cyndi Lauper the first sole woman to win an award for Original Score (for Kinky Boots), but the awards show honored women in both directing categories: Pam MacKinnon picked up Best Direction of a Play for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, while Diane Paulus claimed the Best Direction of a Musical victory for Pippin.

Add to that the fact that Harris proved to be the best awards show host this side of Billy Crystal, and it's no wonder that everyone on the Internet is hoping the Oscars are starting to pick up some tips. Because, yes, Academy — we're still upset about that whole Kathryn Bigelow snub.
