The Real Reason 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Did So Well

by Kadeen Griffiths

It's a well-known fact at this point that those with the wisdom and patients to wait through all the credits of any Marvel movie are going to be treated to some sort of teaser or tie-in scene that most fans would agree was worth the wait. They've gone from the 40 second shawarma scene at the end of the Avengers to teasing the plot lines of whole future movies, as was the case with the two scenes that followed Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Thanks to the world's most fortuitous contract breach, the post-credits scene after Amazing Spider-Man 2 was from X-Men despite the two movie franchises coming from different companies. When the X-Men: Days of Future Past scene itself hit the Internet on Monday, it was basically a one-woman advertisement campaign and that one woman was Jennifer Lawrence.

Lawrence is one of the most talented young actors of our generation. Lawrence was recently named FHM's Sexiest Woman in the World and it's pretty hard to find people who actively hate her. How could you, when she is exactly what would happen if your dorky best friend became a multimillion dollar actress? Lawrence isn't the biggest name in the film, nor is her character the most popular one, but she is a huge box office draw who does a damn good job fully embodying whatever character she's portraying at the time.

If you were expecting the post-credits scene to give some spotlight to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, the single member of the X-Men who is guaranteed to fill those theater seats every time, then Lawrence taking the focus may have come as some surprise. However, last week Jackman stated that he was retiring from Wolverine after one more movie and there was talk before that of Mystique getting her own X-Men spinoff. Could the decision to feature Lawrence's Mystique rescuing a room full of X-Men by taking down most of the soldiers guarding them all by herself be an indication that the company is testing the waters for interest in that spinoff?

The last X-Men clip also prominently featured Mystique and her ability to render a room full of grown men to a groaning pile of bodies and the movie itself is sure to flesh her out with enough emotional gravitas to make her a real contender as leading lady. If Marvel is finally getting with the program that there is real and definite interest in a Mystique movie, then good for them. If not, then at least we still get to enjoy J. Law kicking butt for two more films.
