She's Just Being... Angie?!

by Rachel Simon

Today, Angelina Jolie may be a settled down, humanitarian-focused mom of six, but back in the late '90s and early '00s, she was Hollywood's poster "wild child." She experimented with drugs, dyed her hair jet black, and wore her fiancé's blood in a vial around her neck. In a recent interview with Elle, Jolie revisited this time of her youth, explaining that her supposedly rebellious actions were only just attempts to figure out her identity and break free of her child star constraints. "As you start to feel that you are being corralled into a certain life, you kind of push against it," she said. "It may come out very strange, it may be interpreted wrong, but you’re trying to find out who you are."

Jolie may have been referring to her younger self, but her comments are applicable to plenty of stars today — most notably, Miley Cyrus, whose "wild" actions of recent years have caused critics to accuse her of being on drugs, having mental breakdowns, or otherwise ruining her life, the same fears Jolie's antics must've inspired a few decades back. The similarity between the two stars had us wondering, what else do the seemingly unalike Jolie and Cyrus actually have in common? As it turns out, the answer is a lot.

Similarly #1: Famous Fathers

Although both Jolie and Cyrus earned their superstardom, their entrances into Hollywood was a product of their fathers' fame. Jolie's dad, Jon Voight (above), is an Oscar-winning actor whose 1982 film, Lookin' to Get Out, featured his then-7-year-old daughter in a small part. Cyrus' father, Billy Ray, is a country singer who achieved major fame in the '90s for "Achy Breaky Heart," and who recorded duets with his teenage daughter that landed on the Billboard charts.

Similarity #2: Teenage Stardom and Provocative Photos

Jolie's big break didn't come until Hackers at age twenty, but she made waves as young as fourteen with roles in music videos and risqué modeling shoots. Cyrus, meanwhile, had bit parts in films as a kid, but got huge at age thirteen when Hannah Montana premiered on Disney Channel. Like Jolie, she also had her fair share of controversial photos.

Similarity #3: At 20, Engaged to a Co-Star

Jolie married her Hackers co-star Jonny Lee Miller in 1996, when she was twenty. In 2012, at nineteen, Cyrus became engaged to Liam Hemsworth, her love interest in The Last Song. Unlike Jolie, however, Cyrus didn't end up marrying her fiancé, but stayed engaged for a year until she and Hemsworth split up for good.

Similarity #4: A Love of Tattoos

Here's a fun fact: Miley Cyrus has more tattoos than Angelina Jolie. The singer boasts twenty-two tattoos to the Maleficent star's fourteen, and that's just the ones we know about. The stars' choice of ink may be a bit different — it's not easy to picture Jolie getting a "sad kitty" etched on her inner lip anytime soon — but there's no question that both women really enjoy their tattoos.

Similarly #5: Real Talent

With all the controversy surrounding their personal lives, it's easy to forget that both Jolie and Cyrus are extremely talented. Jolie won an Oscar for 2000's Girl, Interrupted, and has been nominated for another. Her performances in films like Changeling and A Mighty Heart are powerful, and her compelling on-screen presence has elevated otherwise so-so movies such as Wanted and Salt.

While Cyrus' acting prowess leaves much to be desired, her musical talent is impressive. Her most recent album earned great reviews upon its release, and has sold over a million copies to date. Projects like "The Backyard Sessions" and the covers she performs on tour show off her voice, and her command of an audience makes her live shows unmissable.

Similarity #6: Humanitarian Work

Jolie's work with the U.N. and her own organizations has brought major attention to humanitarian crises across the globes, as well as millions of dollars to people in need. She's funded schools, built homes for refugees, and campaigned against sexual violence. Her incredible work has earned her several prestigious honors, including, most recently, an honorary Academy Award.

Cyrus' charitable efforts have received less publicity, but they're still just as impressive. She's a regular figure on the annual list of "most charitable celebrities," donating millions of dollars to causes ranging from breast cancer research to music education and appearing at charity-focused events.

Similarity #7: Scaring the World With Their Twenties

This, of course, is the big one. As said earlier, Jolie's youth was a pretty crazy time, with the actress' hobbies including collecting knives, taking hard drugs, and making out with her brother at the Academy Awards. Cyrus, meanwhile, has spent the last several years getting rid of that Hannah Montana image as fully as possible, by smoking lots of weed, "twerking" on stage, and stripping down to her underwear during concerts.

Like Jolie, critics have accused Cyrus of going crazy or destroying her life, but, like Jolie, she's repeatedly said that she's in control of her actions and is just figuring out who she is. And if she is truly like Jolie, her crazy antics are just ways for her to explore her boundaries after being forced to maintain child star innocence for so long. By the time she's Jolie's age, she'll surely have grown out of this "wild" phase and matured into a wise, experienced adult whose vocabulary does not include thee word "bangerz."
