6 Things We Want from 'The Good Wife' Finale

by Alex Kritselis

We made it: The Good Wife ’s Season 5 finale, “A Weird Year,” is almost upon us. And yeah, it really has been “a weird year." The season kicked off with Alicia Florrick leaving Lockhart/Gardner to start her own law firm with co-worker Cary Agos, and things just got crazier and crazier from there. Diane Lockhart lost her Supreme Court Justice nomination because Peter Florrick is a jerk! The National Security Agency was tapping Alicia’s phones for some reason! And Will Gardner unexpectedly met his demise at the hands of a disturbed client. Whew. Yeah, it’s been a weird year, to say the least.

In a recent interview with TVLine, The Good Wife’s co-executive producer, Robert King, gave us some insight into what to expect from the show’s Season 5 finale. Apparently, Season 5 will end with “a real sense that a new chapter is starting.” King elaborated, “A lot is swinging on Alicia and Diane’s decisions.” Hmm. Additionally, the finale will feature an “explosive” confrontation between new partners Alicia and Cary. Apparently, even actors Julianna Margulies and Matt Czuchry were surprised by the intensity of the scene! I wonder what that's all about?

It’s been a long, tumultuous, and often heartbreaking journey, but we’re finally here. As I said, a lot of crazy stuff has happened this season — and it sounds like the finale’s really going to kick things up a notch! Here are the 6 things I want to see from The Good Wife’s Season 5 finale:

An Epic Showdown Between Diane & Louis Canning

The tension between Diane and Louis has been growing for weeks now, and I want to see it all come to a head in the finale! I don’t know exactly what Canning is plotting (I’m not sure Diane does, either), but when she finds out, oh jeez. It's gonna be good. I probably don’t say this often enough, but Christine Baranski, the actress who plays Diane, is freakin’ awesome. Admittedly, she can be a bit melodramatic at times, but I love every second of it. Without Baranski’s theatrical flair, we probably wouldn’t have Diane’s trademark Disney-villain cackle, and that’s, like, one of my favorite parts of the show! No character on The Good Wife chews scenery like Diane — not even Alicia — and I want to see her decimate that rat Canning (with her words, of course).

Cary Giving Kalinda Sharma an Ultimatum

I used to really love Kalinda, but as we’ve found out more about her as the series has gone on, she’s become less and less appealing to me. She uses people a lot — and I don't like that. Case in point: Kalinda’s been sleeping with Cary on and off this season, mostly just so that she can nab juicy Florrick/Agos intel for Diane. Kalinda might actually have some genuine feelings for Cary, but you wouldn’t know it by the way she treats him. (Also, remember when Kalinda slept with that cop just so that she could steal a case file? That was pretty crappy.) I want Cary to finally stand up for himself! I want him to say, “Kalinda, you’re beautiful and magnetic, but you’re also using me and I’m tired of it. Either take this relationship seriously or get lost.” I want Cary to let Kalinda know that just because she’s hot, smart, and really good at flirting doesn’t mean that she gets to walk around stomping on other peoples’ hearts!

Florrick, Agos & Lockhart

Clearly, things are not going well for Diane over at Lockhart/Gardner — Canning and David Lee are trying to push her out of the firm. Diane and Alicia talked seriously about a merger earlier this season — why doesn’t Diane just say goodbye to Lockhart/Gardner before she has to suffer the embarrassment of being forced to leave and join the team at Florrick/Agos? Makes perfect sense to me! I would love to see Alicia and Diane fighting on the same side again. It's true, they haven’t always been the best of friends, but I do cherish the moments where we get to see them getting along (for example, when they got drunk together after Will’s funeral). Something tells me Cary wouldn’t be on board with the idea, but we’ll see what happens.

Alicia Telling Peter to Take a Hike

Okay, Alicia: you can’t stay in this loveless, sham marriage forever. Eventually, you’re going to want to get out there and start dating again, and you can’t do that if you’re situation with Peter is still a big secret! Gather up some of that patented Alicia Florrick fire and tell Peter to get lost! Get a divorce! So what if it ruins Peter’s political career? You’ll be too happy living your new life with Finn Polmar to even notice. Okay, maybe that’s wishful thinking, but seriously: Alicia, you have to find a way out of this whole Peter mess.

Tons of Awkward Moments Between Jackie Florrick & Veronica Loy

We’ve seen Peter and Alicia’s mothers square off before, and it’s always been wildly entertaining. In the Season 5 finale, the moms have been tasked with throwing Alicia’s son Zach a high school graduation party. Something tells me the two women aren't exactly going to see eye to eye while planning this little celebration, and I want to witness every awkward moment of it! I'm Team Veronica, by the way.

Alicia & Finn Getting Sexy

In all honesty, it might be a little too soon for Alicia and Finn to take their relationship to the next level — but I don’t care! At the very least, I want to see them kiss. I will settle for nothing less. Maybe Alicia and Finn are having a campaign planning session at her place and they’ve both had a little too much red wine. Maybe Alicia goes to grab Finn’s glass for a refill and for a brief moment, their eyes meet — they’ve both wanted this for so long, and in an instant, they know that this is the right time. Then...whoa, sorry. Please excuse my steamy Good Wife fan fiction — I got a little carried away. Now you know just how badly I need this thing to happen!

The Good Wife’s Season 5 finale, “A Weird Year,” airs Sunday night on CBS. I can’t wait to watch all the drama unfold.
