Is That Johnny Depp or Christopher Walken?

by Rachel Simon

By now, Johnny Depp fans are used to seeing the actor transform his appearance for a role. Whether it's sporting a bob for Willy Wonka, showing off lipstick for Alice in Wonderland, or wearing controversial Native American make-up for The Lone Ranger, the sky seems to be the limit for how far Depp's willing to go when it comes to changing up his look for a film, and it's understandably why; no matter what he does to his face, hair, or body, the guy can never look bad. Unfortunately, though, there's an exception to every rule, and Depp's look for his latest movie, Black Mass , seems to be it. Looking at the first photos of the actor in character as crime kingpin Whitey Bulger, "sexy" is the last word that comes to mind. In its place? Oh, maybe just horrific.

In the photos, Depp doesn't even look remotely like his normal self, which I guess is a good thing for the movie, but is pretty disturbing to all of us who like our Johnny Depp dark-haired and attractive. The guy in the photo, with blonde, slicked-back hair and a filled-out face, looks, well, old. Honestly, if I hadn't known this was Depp in character, I would've assumed it was Christopher Walken, and no offense to the 71-year-old, that's not exactly a compliment.

Who knows if Black Mass will be any good — Depp's recent films haven't exactly been must-sees — but judging by the actor's make-up in these photos, it'll at least be realistic. In character, Depp does bear a strong resemblance to Bulger, the Boston-based murderer-turned-fugitive whose story Scott Cooper ( Crazy Heart ) is adapting for film. Here's hoping Black Mass is better than most of Depp's work of late; it would be too awful to think that the actor's transformation into a balding, blonde 60-year-old was for naught.
