What Song Didn't Make It Onto Her First Album?

If there's one thing that Ariana Grande is good at, it's blending old fashioned and modern music. Many of her songs sound not unlike something Postmodern Jukebox would put together. Her first album, Yours Truly, featured pop and hip hop songs like "The Way" and "Popular Song" alongside the vintage sounds present in songs like "Tattooed Heart" and "Daydreamin'". On Thursday morning, Grande released "Boyfriend Material", a song that didn't make it onto Yours Truly and it's got that exact blend of modern and old fashioned pop that makes Grande's songs so catchy and uplifting.

"This song means a lot to me and holds such a special place in my heart as it was one of the first songs I did when I started working on Yours Truly..." said Grande in the Twitter debut of the song. "You'll get more of these oldies too as time goes on! ...Love you all so much. You are everything. Love you."

The song begins with a blend of old time doo-wop and scat singing before launching into Grande's signature pop style — the best kind of bubblegum. It's sweet and saccharine with a quick tempo and a repetitive drum line that practically invites you to nod your head along with the song. It harkens images of teenage girls dancing around the school yard bragging about their significant others, not unlike Sandy and the Pink Ladies during the "Summer Lovin'" sequence of Grease. "Boyfriend Material" would make a similarly fun summer song and I, for one, am already disappointed that it doesn't have a music video.

If "Problem" is an indication of where Grande's sound is going, then this definitely wouldn't fit in with any of her current, more mature sounds and styles. However, as an addendum to Yours Truly, which Grande adds happened when she was 17 years old, it's perfect. It captures the teenage girl experience in the greatest kind of way, like Taylor Swift at her best. In fact, it's even better than that.
