How Is 'Jane The Virgin' A Drama And Not A Comedy?

by Casey Rackham

Networks have been rolling out their new fall schedules over the past couple of weeks, and so it only makes sense that The CW decided to release trailers for two of its new dramas: The Flash and Jane the Virgin. And, well, the premise for Jane the Virgin is pretty much too hilarious to put into words. The show is one of CW's new hour-long dramas, and it's based off of the popular Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen. And get this: It's a show about “a series of surprising and unforeseen events [that] causes a hard-working, religious young Latina woman to be accidentally artificially inseminated.” What the what? How does that even happen? And more importantly, how is this new pilot not specifically a comedy?

If someone were to show me the trailer without telling me anything about the show, I would assume it's a promo for a new CBS half-hour comedy about a virgin who's pregnant and the inevitable shenanigans that ensue. Because seriously, the idea of a virgin mistakenly being inseminated by her doctor is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. And I mean ridiculous in a hysterical way.

Don't believe me? Take a look at the teaser trailer below.
