Wait, Ryan Gosling Was Booed at Cannes?

Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was met with some very mixed reviews. It was reported that after the first screening, audience members both cheered and booed as the credits rolled. Though no full reviews have been released yet, some critics took to Twitter to express their reactions, many of which were quite biting. The film, which stars Christina Hendricks and was also written by Gosling, is about a single mom in a dilapidated Detroit where the lives of everyone living there are being drowned (figuratively and literally).

Gregory Ellwood of Hitflix tweeted, "It doesn't all work but Ryan Gosling hits for the fences with #LostRiver and hits something gorgeous. An unexpected vision." Whereas Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian commented, "If Ryan Gosling hadn’t been such a star actor, he’d never have allowed to direct *stares into space, screams*.”

Yeeeeesh.

It looks like the early reactions to Lost River tell us that it's a "You either love it or you hate it" kind of film. For die-hard Gosling fans, it might be a tough pill to swallow... or it could be the film that changes his persona as Hollywood's number one pretty boy into more of a thoughtful artist. If Leo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck can do it, so certainly can Ryan Gosling.
