Watch This Boy Meet His First Gay Couple

Kids say the darnedest things — but a lot of the time, the amazing things that come out of their mouths aren’t just hilarious little sound bytes. We can learn a lot about how to process new thoughts and concepts in an open, tolerant way by looking at how kids deal with them. Take the little boy in this video, for instance. He’s just met his first gay couple, and how he sorts through the totally-new-to-him idea is a shining example of how everyone should approach new ideas — both young whippersnappers and old fogies alike.

Also, he is precious. Seriously. So flippin’ cute.

Let’s take it step by step, shall we?

  1. First, he’s presented with something he’s never before encountered. Of course he finds it pretty incredible; such is the nature of brand new concepts.
  2. Then, he starts dealing with his piqued curiosity: He asks a lot of questions, because that’s what kids do. To be honest, I think it’s something more adults should do, too — nothing satisfies your curiosity and waylays misinformation like actually finding out the answer to a question from someone who absolutely knows what they’re talking about.
  3. Third, he confirms the concept with himself: “So that means you love each other,” he says. It’s not really a question at this point; it’s a statement of fact.
  4. And finally… he just carries on. Now that he’s gotten all the information he needs, it’s a non-issue. He’s off to play ping-pong, and if his new gay friends want to join him, that’s A-OK with him. If not, that’s cool too. Also, kudos to the adults for using this whole exchange as an awesome teaching moment.

Openness, understanding, adaptability, zero prejudice… this kid is going to go far. And so, hopefully, will the rest of the world, if we start cultivating the same qualities in ourselves.
