It Was a Bad Pants Night on American Idol

by Erin Mayer

Last night on the season finale of American Idol, I'm sure there was plenty of incredible singing. But what I couldn't stop focusing on were all the hideous pairs of pants. Seriously, who allowed the performers on stage like that?! Don't they have professionals to help with such pressing wardrobe decisions as which pair of pants to pull on when performing on live television?

I can't sing like Jena Irene to save my life, but I'm pretty confident I could pick out a better pair of pants during a power outage in the middle of the night. I understand that exciting pants are having a moment, and I fully support that. Exciting pants are awesome. They make a statement. But skintight pink checkers? Just say no.

But newcomer and Idol runner-up Irene was not the only person to sport seriously horrendous pants last night. Seasoned songstresses Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland and Hayley Williams from Paramore both performed while wearing sub-par slacks. Performers, take note — if you're going on Idol, you may want to play it somewhat safe in the pants department.

Check out the offending trousers below.

The Idol finalist is talented and gorgeous, but what is going on with this outfit? It's as if several trends from the '90s vomited on a hot-pink pop star from the early '00s. The pants are definitely the worst part, but the gold Doc Martens don't do them any favors.

Is your grandmother's embroidery missing? Jennifer Nettles stole it for her pants.

These could be sort of cute if you squint and tilt your head to the left. But the overall effect of this outfit is "wow, that would look really good on a mannequin in the window of Forever 21." On an actual human? Not so much.
