8 Weed Apps for the Budding Stoner

by Camille Bautista

Budding entrepreneurs (OK, mostly just stoners) were in for a bit of a disappointment Wednesday when Apple pulled Weed Firm, a popular pot-themed game, from its iTunes App Store. The app ranked at the top of the charts, but Apple seemed to disagree with the adventures of expelled botany sophomore Ted Growing. The game allowed users to learn to grow weed and interact with customers, crooked cops, gangsters, and "horny dancer Jane," all to ultimately become "the biggest weed dealer in town." We can't imagine the issue.

In a statement on its website, developer Manitoba Games said that the decision to boot Weed Firm from the online store was at the discretion of tech giant Apple — though a possibly tweaked, more censored version could make a return soon.

"We guess the problem was that the game was just too good and got to number one in All Categories, since there are certainly a great number of weed based apps still available, as well as games promoting other so-called 'illegal activities' such as shooting people, crashing cars, and throwing birds at buildings," the statement reads.

Apple's regulation of marijuana-related apps can be a little random: A search for "weed" still brings up a bevy of results on iTunes, including games like "Ganja Farm," or the multi-player classic, "iRoll Up Friends." If you're lucky enough to live in one of the 21 states that have legalized marijuana , you might want to get with the times and check out the best stoner apps out there. Luckily, we've got you covered.

Weed Maps

Think Yelp, only for marijuana. If you're ever on the lookout for dispensaries (for those lucky enough to have them legalized), Weed Maps can help you find a spot.

Smokers can view dispensaries' selections of offerings online, as well as price points. But wait, there's more: the app and site also offers something akin to Groupon for ganja, with deals and steals on your weed.

Leafly

Touted as the "world's largest cannabis strain resource," Leafly lets you browse a library of marijuana varieties, searching based on its effects, types, ratings, and more. Like Weed Maps, you can use Leafly to locate dispensaries near you. Only this app also has a feature that can connects patients with doctors who can help them through the medical authorization process.

There's even a rating system where you can detail your experience, as well as a private journal — you know, to keep a record of those brilliant ideas as they strike.

What's Open

This one may not be weed-specific, but when the munchies strike at 3am and you're nowhere near a local 24/7 bodega, times can get rough. Luckily, What's Open, available on Apple's iTunes App Store, can help you find stores or restaurants that are open nearby.

To fulfill your random craving for cheese fries, a similar app is also available on Google Chrome.

Herb Converter

For the dealer that shouldn't have skipped all those math classes, Herb Converter's got you covered. Wary buyers can also use the measurement app to make sure that they're not getting the short end of the bud.

Though some reviewers complain of the lack of cost estimations previously featured on the application, users can still convert between grams, eighths, quarters, and half-ounces.

Marijuana Handbook

Everything you ever wanted to know about Mary Jane is rolled up in one comprehensive guide in the Marijuana Handbook, where you can sort through strains, and find recipes for edibles.

Cannabis myths are debunked on the app, giving users information to argue in defense of marijuana. You can also keep up with the latest lingo by using the app's dictionary of most commonly-used terms.

Weed Tycoon

If you ever wished your garden had more of variety while playing Farmville, then you'll probably love Weed Tycoon.

Dubbed "the ultimate marijuana Sim game," you can purchase shops and set prices for your own strains, and buy farms to grow your own weed and warehouses to store it. It's all to become the best recreational business owner you were born to be. Dream big, kids.

Stoner's Handbook

Perfect for beginners, the Stoner's Handbook teaches you important life skills, like how to roll your first joint. There are tips on how to store your stash so it doesn't go stale, tutorials on bottle and gravity bongs, and games to play while indulging. Basically — all the questions you may have been embarrassed to ask, and then some.

Cheech and Chong’s The Fatty

No weed list would be complete without mention of Cheech and Chong, and of course, they have their own app. The Fatty lets you superimpose pictures of yourself with the famous tokers, has classic lines from the comedy duo, and also informers users of the latest marijuana news.

And in case you need be reminded to wake up and smell the ganja, the app allows you to set an alarm — because hey, it's always 4:20 somewhere, right?
