Your First Look at 'The Giver' Character Posters

by Kadeen Griffiths

I'm not saying that Hollywood is trying to ruin our childhoods, but Hollywood is trying to ruin our childhoods. That's pretty much what Hollywood exists to do. Still, ruined childhood or no, there's a part of all of us that can't help but be a little excited that Lois Lowry's The Giver is being turned into a movie. Even though Taylor Swift has a role in The Giver and that, somehow, is not the worst news we've heard about the adaptation. It's like a car crash. You can't look away. Especially not now that The Giver's character posters have been released.

Different websites got different posters, but so far we've seen the likes of Taylor Swift, Alexander Skarsgard, Meryl Streep, Cameron Monaghan and more. And, unlike that certain movie trailer that we're all still trying to forget, the movie posters are all blessedly in black and white, reflecting one of the important tenant of the books. The part of The Giver where Jonas learns what colors are wouldn't be nearly as poignant if the whole film to that point had been in color, now would it?

To be honest, these posters are a good step in the right direction as far as restoring everyone's faith in the movie is concerned. It's still probably going to be a nightmare and the book is always going to be better than the movie (always, no exceptions), but at least they seem to be trying to do the characters some justice. That's all we can really ask for these days. That a shirtless scene for Alexander Skarsgard somehow some way.

Still, I'm not sure how reassured I am by Taylor Swift's movie poster. Everyone looks solemn if not a little harassed, but Taylor Swift just looks like someone asked her to look at the camera and forget to smile. Instead of seeing Rosemary, I'm still seeing a brunette Taylor Swift. And why is her mouth open? Is that one of the mysteries that the film will solve?
