Fashion Forecast: Saturday, May 24th

by Tyler Atwood

It's officially Memorial Day Weekend, and with all of the chic excursions you undoubtedly have planned through Monday, the weather will be a key factor in determining if you're clutching your umbrella or basking in the sunshine with your hat and shades. Though the weather may have much of the country thinking it's still April due to scattered showers and storms, a lucky few cities can look forward to clear days and — gasp — actual hot weather.

I imagine that your idea of barbecue attire doesn't include galoshes and a slicker, but just in case the weather threatens to change your plans, you can be fashionably prepared. May can still be mercurial weather-wise, so keeping an extra scarf and an umbrella on hand is in your best interest, but think breezy layers in terms of your ensemble to ensure you stay comfortable no matter what the temperature. Leave your buttoned-up office wear for weekdays, and try more relaxed pieces for the weekend: bohemian dresses, slouchy silk pants, and lightweight, patterned shorts are all fair game for an off-duty look, and a long weekend is ideal for taking advantage of less rigid sartorial restrictions. However, no matter what you're wearing, take the long weekend to unplug and relax. Bon voyage!

1. LOS ANGELES: 73 DEGREES AND PARTLY CLOUDY

Los Angeles will continue to enjoy temperate weather through the weekend, which means a plethora of easy wardrobe options to take you through your weekend plans, whether you’re strolling down Sunset Boulevard or attending a barbecue in Silver Lake. Try layering a silk tank and draped sweater with a ruched cotton skirt for an ensemble that will take you through your day and evening activities. T by Alexander Wang’s Black Spandex Twist Miniskirt will provide a sleek, relaxed look when paired with your favorite worn-in tee.

2. MIAMI: 89 DEGREES AND SUNNY

Miami natives, rejoice! It’s officially summer, and at a balmy 89 degrees, outdoor activities are definitely feasible. However, the beautiful weather comes with a caveat: Dressing in breezy, light layers is a necessity, so try a pair of brightly patterned shorts like Rory Beca’s Pae Drawstring pair combined with a faded cotton tee.

3. JUNEAU: 58 DEGREES AND PARTLY CLOUDY

At 58 degrees and partially cloudy this weekend, Juneau will be a bit brisk this weekend. Residents will benefit from a warm sweater to beat the cold, and a good pair of boyfriend jeans with some heeled sandals to kick the look up a notch. Joie’s Janice Heels in Black/Porcelain will give your ensemble extra style.

4. NEW YORK: 69 DEGREES

New York City is in for another bout of stormy weather, so galoshes and raincoat are a weekend fashion requirement. Save your classic trench for the office and try a more casual mackintosh in a sunny shade paired with a lightweight sweater and jeans. Urban Outfitter's Coincidence and Chance Cutest Rain Slicker Jacket comes in a sweet blush shade for those who want to match their outerwear to their florals.

5. BOSTON: 61 DEGREES WITH SHOWERS

Boston’s mercurial weather will continue for the weekend, but at 61 degrees, it’s a perfect excuse to pull out your favorite chinos and silk blouse for a lazy Saturday excursion. Just make sure to bring your best umbrella and a jacket for protection against the rain. Try Emerson Thorpe’s Emilia Pants for a touch of relaxed glamour.

6. CHICAGO: 65 DEGREES AND SUNNY

Though Chicago may not be quite as warm as Houston or Miami this weekend, it will be bright and crisp on Saturday. Celebrate by pulling out a pair of colored jeans and a casual tee, paired with chic ballet flats or wedge sandals. Try Paige Denim Jeans in Ballet Pink for a subtler take on the trend.

7. HOUSTON: 88 DEGREES AND PARTIAL CLOUD COVER

If you’re headed outdoors in Houston this Saturday, you’re in luck. Saturday’s warm 88 degree weather is ideal for enjoying some time in the sun. Try a ladylike cotton dress with a subtle pattern, like Kain’s July Striped Mini Dress. For added sun protection, a chic chapeau will keep your face shielded while adding interest to your look.
